The shallow, ten-mile-long Chaco Canyon has been visited by humans for nearly 3000 years, but it wasn't until around 1000 years ago that the first farmers, the Anasazi, settled there and constructed massive stone buildings of a type never seen before. These great houses were built along celestial alignments, included water-collection systems, religious meeting rooms, and were linked to other communities by an extensive network of roads. After 300 years of occupation, however, the area was abruptly and mysteriously abandoned.
Come along with Mike Shipman and Tim Vollmer as we photograph and explore this remote, desolate, and strangely beautiful country. Because of its remote location, we'll be spending each day at the canyon, visiting the pueblo ruins in the morning and afternoon for photography and resting or conducting workshops during mid-day. We'll camp for four nights at Chaco to be sure to capture early and late light, plus have the opportunity for night photography. The afternoon of the last full day at Chaco we'll take a road trip to visit the iconic Shiprock for sunset. Following the workshop will be an optional 2 days of post-processing and review workshops for those who would like some help and feedback (see below). The gateway city for this workshop is Albuquerque, New Mexico. It's recommended to arrive the day prior to the start of the workshop and depart the morning after the end of the workshop to account for possible delays, especially at the end of the workshop. Tour Itinerary: Day 1: Arrive Albuquerque in the a.m., depart for Chaco Canyon, set up camp, meet and greet, lunch, afternoon and sunset at ruins. Days 2-3: Early morning for sunset, shoot through mid-morning, mid-day free, afternoon, sunset, evening/night photography. Day 4: Sunrise at Chaco, lunch, afternoon and sunset trip to Shiprock, overnight back at Chaco. Day 5: Sunrise at Chaco, mid-day departures to Albuquerque. Optional Day 6: Full day post-processing and review, Albuquerque. Optional Day 7: Post-processing and image review, Albuquerque, afternoon/evening departures home. Notes: Price: $1200.00
