Sugar has played an enormously important role in Surinam’s history. When slavery was common here, there were hundreds of sugarcane plantations in Surinam. During the time when contract labourers were used, the sugar refinery at Mariënburg played an important role. Surinam rum, which was originally produced in this factory, is still produced in Paramaribo.
We will take you along this historical time line on ‘the sugar trail’. You will enjoy a relaxed trip to Commewijne, and learn about this district’s bitter-sweet past. Concordia plantation In the morning we will take a boat trip on the Upper Commewijne river to the former Concordia sugar plantation.
