Tour Itinerary: Day 1: Arrive at the Kilimanjaro International Airport where you will be met and transferred to the Mountain Inn Hotel. After dinner briefing on your climb. Overnight at Mountain Inn. Includes: (D). Day 2: Today you begin your climb starting at the Kilimanjaro National Park Gate at Machame. Accompanied by the best guides, cooks and porters on the mountain, you’ll trek through lush forest to the Machame Hut (10,000-ft). Camp Overnight. Includes: (B), (L), (D). Day 3: Leaving the forest, the path follows a steep ridge, passing through heather and open moorlands. Then you’ll cross a large gorge to reach Shira Hut (12,500 ft). Camp Overnight. Includes: (B), (L), (D). Day 4: Today, you’ll venture eastward and continue ascending through the dry landscape before dropping again to reach Barranco Hut (13,000 ft). Camp Overnight. Includes: (B), (L), (D). Day 5: Climbing steeply out of the Barranco Valley, you’ll cross the Karanga Valley, then turn north to reach Barafu Hut (15,500 ft). Camp Overnight. Includes: (B), (L), (D). Day 6: After and early start, you’ll reach the Stella Point in time for sunrise. Then, onwards to Uhuru Peak (19,340 ft.), the highest point in all of Africa. Only 3 degrees from the equator and snow-capped all year round. Afterwards, descend to Mweka Hut (10,300 ft.). Camp Overnight. Includes: (B), (L), (D). Day 7: Descend to the park gate, where you will be transferred to the Mountain Inn. Includes: (B), (L), (D). Day 8: Today, you’ll journey to the village of Marangu. Begin the day by learning to cook traditional Chagga dishes – the way the Chagga do it. After your meal, you will tour the village of Marangu and your guide is an expert on village stories, myths, history and traditional medicine. Besides exploring ancient bunker tunnels made large enough to house cattle, you’ll visit waterfalls and learn about their spirits and more. Traveler option: Either spend the night at the homey little Outpost or a homestay at the home of a Chagga family. Includes: (B), (L), (D). Day 9: This morning, engage in a cultural session with the Mamba blacksmiths. Marangu has a strong tradition in blacksmithing. Learn its history and stories. With the blacksmiths as your teachers, you’ll make your own creation, such as a spear. In the afternoon, meet master Chagga carvers. In addition to hearing the stories and history behind their unique carving style, the carvers will teach you how to carve using traditional tools. Traveler option: Either spend the night at the homey little Outpost or a homestay at the home of a Chagga family. Includes: (B), (L), (D). Day 10: You’ll end your stay in Marangu with a toast... of Mbege (banana beer). Mbege is an integral part of Chagga daily life. At the home of one of the area’s master brewers, learn how the Mbege is brewed from start to finish. This afternoon, you’ll be transferred to the Tanzanite, which borders a wildlife reserve.
