A possibility to see the rarest European dragonflies. Bulgaria is the country with the biggest biodiversity in Europe. Many endemic and rare plants, animals. In 1999/ published in 2001/ in Bulgaria was discovered a new dragonfly species/ Bulgarian emerald/ Somatochlora Borisii. Together with all the other interesting and rare dragonflies Bulgarian wildlife is one of the most interesting in Europe.
Day 1: Our tour begins with a transfer Pirin mountain N.P. Accommodation at local hotel for two nights follows. Some of the most interesting species are : Selysiothemis nigra, Southern Emerald Damselfly (Lestes barbarus). Includes: (D).
Day 2: A visit to a hilly, very dry and hot area in summer with hot mineral springs. Some of the most interesting species are : Keeled Skimmer (Orthetrum coerulescens), Scarce Chaser (Libellula fulva).
Includes: (B), (L), (D).
Day 3: Transfer to Rodopi mountain. Our is situated at 1500 m above sea level, surrounded by beautiful primeval coniferous forests. Staying overnight at the hotel. En route we shall visit a nice gorge. The gorge area is part of the Rodopi Mountains but it is something quite different from the rounded hills covered with coniferous forests near our hotel. The first thing that impresses the visitor are the huge cliffs towering above and the deep rocky valley, where the meandering river can hardly be seen. Strange trees of a local subspecies of the Black Pine (Pinus nigra) grow right out of the rocks without any soil for their roots to dig into. All the time while we are there we cannot help but stand in awe before the nature’s grandeur. Unfortunately, this is only a poor and sketchy description of this extraordinary place with its caverns and the rumble of its waterfalls. One can hardly imagine the gorge beauty if one does not see it with one's own eyes. This exceptionally beautiful area is 1200 m above sea level. The most interesting species for the day could be: Cordulegaster heros, Southern Hawker (Aeshna cyanea), Downy Emerald (Cordulia aenea), Somatochlora borisii ( Bulgarian Emerald ). Includes: (B), (L), (D).
Day 4: We move again to the next main stop of our program. We will travel along a not very long but "slow" road because we are in the Rodopi Mountains. You will notice with amazement how kilometer after kilometer the mountain changes, the coniferous forests are replaced by mixed ones and afterward by pure deciduous stands, and the trees become smaller and stunted. Then come the shrubs followed by bare rocky hills and finally the huge rocky hills alternate with huge cliffs and scrub. An ancient extinct volcano and everywhere basalt stones are scattered about the places. Somatochlora meridionalis, Calieshna microstigma, Epallage fatime, Chalcolestes viridis. Here is the place where the new species Somatochlora borisi was found. Includes: (B), (L), (D).
Day 5: Again a long but necessary transfer, this time to the lowland of the Bulgarian Black Sea coast. In the region there are plenty of wetlands – marshlands, lakes, small rivers, which is quite promising for our tour. Is in here, where few years ago only in on small place for about of 3 hours we found 25 different species of dragonflies. We will spend 2 nights at the local hotel.
Includes: (B), (L), (D).
Day 6: Today we visit the local wetlands. Some of the most interesting species, we expect are: /Lestes marostigma / Dark Emerald Damselfly, Norfolk Hawker (Anaciaeschna isosceles), Beautiful Demoiselle (Calopterix virgo), Somatochlora meridionalis, Two-toothed Golden-ringed Dragonfly), Large Red Damselfly), Lestes macrostigma, Calopterix virgo meridionalis, Cordulegaster picta, Anax parthenope, Chalcolestes parvidens. Includes: (B), (L), (D).
Day 7: Today we reach Danube river. We drive along a mountain river. Nice nature and stops for dragonflies along. In the afternoon we are already in Northern Bulgaria. And late afternoon we arrive at our hotel, where an accommodation for two nights follows. Includes: (B), (L), (D).
Day 8: Today we visit the local lakes and the Danube river. Some of the most interesting species, we expect are : Sympetrum pedemontanum, Sympetrum meridionale. Includes: (B), (L), (D).
Day 9: Today a transfer to the Balkan range follows. We drive along the Danube river , where we’ll visit another marshland. Initially it was a typical Danube riverside marsh, turned into a fish farm during the communist regime, and turned again into a marshland nowadays. In the afternoon we head south and reach the our hotel, at the foot of the Balkan. We’ll spend our last night here. The hotel is built in the traditional Bulgarian architectural style. The restaurant at the hotel offers Bulgarian national dishes and drinks. At the open-air museum those interested can have a look at our old Bulgarian crafts and buy some typical Bulgarian souvenirs. Some of the most interesting species are : Onychogomphus forcipatus Cordulegaster bidentata, Lestes drias. Includes: (B), (L), (D).
Day 10: Transfer to Sofia and departure after the lunch. Includes: (B).
