The strength of Amazonia's itinerary lies in the incredible amount of choices available to you. The great ecological diversity allows an opportunity to see and do many things, so we encourage longer trips; one to two weeks is a typical length of stay.
Our lodge on the Tahuayo River has access to a great variety of ecosystems that we can explore as well as many native communities downriver. There are sufficient English speaking native men and women guides so that each person can go at their own pace and according to their interests. This is ideal for people who do not want to be stuck with a large group on a pre-set itinerary. You can choose a photographer's pace, a soft pace or a ruggedly adventurous pace. You can concentrate more on birdwatching, canoeing, canopy exploration, fishing or native culture. You can be active before breakfast or well into the evening. Families can have a private guide who specializes in working with pre-teens or young teens. Special itineraries are available for marriages, honeymoons, anniversaries, and other special occasions. There are many facilities, offered by no other tour operators, to give you unique experiences in exploring the rainforest. One example is the canopy zipline system. Many companies have canopy walkways or towers, but only with Amazonia can you actually fly from tree to tree, with nothing underfoot except a hundred feet of rainforest. Another example is the newest in underwater hydrophonic technology, to allow guests to actually listen to the communication of pink dolphins and other aquatic animals. Travelers thirsting for the ultimate in adventure can leave the lodge with their guide and camp in the old growth terra firme forest in the interior of the reserve. Listed on the right is a sample of itinery options to choose from. Most are available year round, but if there are recommended seasons, these are noted in parentheses. All are guided by our staff. Tour Itinerary Day 1: After clearing customs in Lima Airport look for our staff member holding up a sign with our logo. You will then be taken to a hotel in Lima (Usually Hotel Melodia). Day 2: After clearing baggage security in Iquitos Airport look for our staff, wearing tee shirts with our logo. Our boat will take you upriver for two hours on the Amazon River, then another two hours upriver on a tributary, called the Tahuayo River, to our lodge. Orientation to the lodge, introduction to your guide(s) and assignment of cabin. Days 3 - 7: A great variety of activities are offered from our lodge in and around the Tamshiyacu-Tahuayo Reserve. Examples are swimming with pink dolphins, flying through the treetops on a canopy zipline, visiting native villages or having a session with a native shaman, visiting manakin lek, hiking to pygmy marmoset trees, canoeing into hoatzin rookery, etc. Every day your guide will post a variety of day and half day trips you can choose from. If you wish to do something on our itinerary page a private guide will be assigned to do this. No extra charge for a private guide or for an itinerary customized according to your pace and interests. Camping trips in the interior of the reserve, with all gear provided or jungle survival training are also offered for the adventurous traveler, at no extra charge (we recommend an extension of 3-7 days for these adventurous itineraries) Day 8: Morning excursion in the jungle. Afternoon boat to Iquitos. Transfer to airport. Fly to Lima. Notes: + $100 for each additional day.
