It is comfortably nestled between California’s famous Point Conception and the city of Santa Barbara. Lying at the western edge of the Los Padres National Forest, this wonderfully concealed beach is located where the Santa Ynez Mountains drop directly into the Pacific Ocean. A convenient, yet little known access takes us to a perfect starting point for our coastal kayaking excursions. Refugio State Beach is an excellent destination - and distance - for our single-day tour. Many of the beaches we pass can be reached only by ocean kayak, with some offering secluded shelter for a lunch break, exploratory walk along the shore or simple respite from paddling. Our journey often includes a visit from some of our ocean companions such as the Pacific white-sided dolphin, California sea lion, harbor seal, and, during migratory seasons, the gray whale. Paddling with the prevailing current and wind at our back help make this nine-mile excursion perfect for both beginning and experienced kayakers who are looking for a day of ocean exploration.
A fun introductory kayaking lesson is included in all trips. Ocean kayaks are specially designed for superior stability, unlike river kayaks which are narrow and tippy so they can be righted easily -- kayaking knowledge and special athletic ability are NOT required! And the sheltered paddling areas usually have mild surf and are without strong winds.
Most trips are scheduled 'On Demand' to suit participants' convenience. Trip dates can be scheduled for as few as 4 participants. Tandem kayaks are available.
Your Itinerary (one day):
Trip starting times vary throughout the year due to weather, tides, and participants' convenience. Plan to spend the entire day (approximately 5 - 6 hours) following the group's whims regarding paddling speed, distance from shore, beach landings, and surf play.
Airfare is not included in the tour price.
