Our small group size is especially appropriate for this super productive body of water. Located halfway between Whittier and Valdez, Unakwik has been overlooked by most paddlers as too awkward to access. Also there are a limited number of suitable beaches to camp on, but once one does decide to visit, they are rewarded by a largely unvisited Inlet with abundant wildlife. We will spend the first half of the trip exploring this remote country including a tidewater glacier, before heading back toward Whittier along the outer mainland. This is another travel (paddle) oriented trip for those already comfortable in sea kayaks and paddling 12 - 15 miles a day. We end our trip among a small group of islands that is home to puffins and sea otters and neat old ruins.
Your Itinerary: Day 1: Starts in Anchorage with a drive down the very scenic Seward Highway to Whittier. Here we load up on a water taxi for an approx.1.5 hr ride out to a small island at the south end of Unakwik Inlet. Weather dependent, we will paddle up the Inlet to our first base camp. (B) (L) Day 2: This day we will go coasting along the mainland by numerous waterfalls till we round the corner and are face to face with Meares Glacier. We'll spend the afternoon watching for calving and exploring the other side of the Inlet on the way back. (B) (L) (D) Day 3: This day we will begin our paddle south and head over to Jonah Bay which teams with otters, deer and birds. (B) (L) (D) Day 4: We return to the same Island that we were dropped off on. Now we can explore the old fox farm ruins and climb the high point of the Island. (B) (L) (D) Day 5: We continue our travels east along a series of small islands exploring the respective histories and wildlife. (B) (L) (D) Day 6: Weather dependent we'll head out to the outer islands and set up camp here. Wildlife viewing and exploring the ruins on this island are highlights. (B) (L) (D) Day 7: In the afternoon we will be picked up by the water taxi return to Whittier and the drive back to Anchorage. (B) (L) Notes: Groups of 4 or more get a group discount.
