This is an incredibly popular trip! Without question, the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge is decorated like a 40’ Christmas tree. We will try to select the best possible location depending both on the caribou and other people attracted to the same phenomenon. But any spot during this special time will prove to be the best present of the season.
Your Itinerary: Day 1: Leaving Fairbanks on a scheduled 1 1/2 hr flight to Arctic Village, we will switch to a smaller plane to fly into our foothills base camp. We will spend the afternoon moving camp to a remote site located by a babbling brook. Along the way we will be able to become familiar with some of the many flowers and bird song seen and hear constantly. (L) (D) Day 2: On all of our base camp trips, at breakfast we discuss the options for the day and we decide what seems to be the most productive choice. Sometimes sitting in camp can seem like the right thing to do when you are watching hundreds of caribou or a bear. There are several all day hiking options from this site and a tremendous opportunity for seeing a variety of wildlife. (B) (L) (D) Day 3: Another day, another choice to be made. Perhaps this day we hike up the nearby ridge and look out over the coastal plain to the Arctic Ocean. Sometimes this is a sea of caribou. (B) (L) (D) Day 4: Paradise continues. Maybe a second cup of coffee sounds good after staying up most of the night watching the sun drift across the northern horizon. A walk back to the alpine ridges where a small band of sheep and some cliff nesting raptors are would be the thing to do today. (B) (L) (D) Day 5: We meet the pilot today who will begin our journey back to Fairbanks. A short walk back to the strip and then a repeat of the first day - just backwards. Generally we return to town by 6 pm. (B) (L) Notes: Groups of 4 receive a discount.
