Honduras is located south east of Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula and Belize, less than 3 hours by air from Florida. The Bay Islands lie off this northern coast of Honduras in Central America, amidst the spectacular coral reefs. The island group consists of three main islands - Roatan, Utila and Guanaja - and many smaller cayes and atolls. No high-rise hotels, no hawkers, no throngs of tourists, no roads, cars or telephone wires. None of these things exist on Guanaja to spoil this tropical paradise with its spectacular coral reefs and white sand shores. Though the island is home to several villages of fishermen and merchants, the majority of its land-mass is still a wilderness in the truest sense of the word. Guests are accommodated in individual cabins scattered throughout tropical gardens. While kayaking overnights and meals are arranged at other small inns and resorts. Each expedition is lead by a bilingual guide, experienced in boating, diving, and the local history of the islands.
Once you arrive at West Peak, outings for the day can be arranged. From the West Peak docks guests can stroll along the beach, gentle surf and coral shoals; and allow themselves to disappear into the warm solitude of their own private, palm-shaded cove. These shores are part of one of the largest reef systems in the world. The island has a well-deserved reputation for world class diving and snorkeling. The reefs of Guanaja encompass many superb underwater seascapes for scuba & snorkeling exploration - from wall dives to wrecks, from volcanic outcroppings to crags, crannies and caves. The Guanaja reefs still maintain their pristine nature in crystal clear waters with an abundant diversity of fish and coral life. From the beaches guests and crew also may launch traditional island dories for short journeys to various dive sites. Kayakers on the 1-week trip around the island can add a day or two of diving as they visit other inns and resorts around the island. Scuba activities at West Peak are limited to experienced divers. The full circumnavigation does require a level of boating skill. Your Itinerary: Day 1 - Saturday. Arrive at the Guanaja airstrip early afternoon, and go by water taxi to West Peak Inn.
