Weaving is an integral part of indigenous Guatemalan women's lives. It is creative expression, clothing, community and, with the rise of tourism, income. You'll learn about various aspects of traditional Mayan weaving, its history, and its status today through lectures and travel. Field trips will take you throughout Guatemala and face to face with its weavers and weavings.
We've been sharing Guatemala with folks interested in its gorgeous textiles for 15 years now, and many of our participants have wanted to return and explore another areas in Guatemala, so we've developed four different itineraries, and are currently working on a 5th to Coban !! We always start out in lovely and familiar Antigua, but then branch out to various parts of Guatemala. Karen's speciality is called THE SEQUEL, where we take folks to Quetzaltenango (Xela), visiting local cooperatives and ikat weavers, and then journey to Totonicapan and Nahuala, in the heart of the Mayan highlands. We can't skip Lake Atitlan, even though we've been there before. It is incredibly beautiful and there are plenty more villages to explore. What an adventure!! Notes: Price includes: Experienced instruction with Karen Searle, lodging in lovely colonial style hotels, a hearty breakfast each morning, all ground transportation (including airport PU) and some pretty interesting cultural experiences.
