After the partition the wildlife population of India was slowly decreasing and there were fears that many species of wildlife were becoming extinct due to hunting. In the early seventies the government took a serious note of the situation and number of actions were taken to curb the situation. These included setting up of a number of national Parks and Wildlife sanctuaries, prohibiting hunting in the wild and special projects such as the Project Tiger.

The Reserve is an excellent interspersion of the Dadars (flat hill tops), grassy expanses, dense forests and riverine forests. It is very rich in flora, largely due to the combination of landforms and soil types, apart from the moist character of the region. The rich habitat diversity of the Reserve supports a wide range of wildlife species along with innumerable lesser life forms, and is the sanctum sanctorum of many typical Central Indian fauna. Besides harbouring a viable population of the tiger, Kanha has distinguished itself in saving the endangered hard ground barasingha from extinction, and supporting the last world population of this deer species. The terrain is undulating, with most of the area covered by small hill ranges, steeply sloping on the sides. The park is known for its natural beauty, richness in flora and fauna. As the prey concentration is high along the Pench river, tigers usually inhabit this belt. Wild dogs are commonly seen in packs of 12 to 15, near Chhedia, Jamtara, Bodanala and Pyorthadi areas of the Reserve. Upon arrival in Pench transfer to hotel.
