This single track mountain bike odyssey is about fantastic, fun, mountain biking in different and amazing locations throughout New Zealand’s epic South Island. On our journey you’ll be amazed by the awe-inspiring natural landscapes that change over relatively short distances.
Tour Itinerary:
Day 1: Arrive in Christchurch and head North to Hanmer Springs for a single track forest ride, a BBQ and a soak in the natural hot mineral pools. Overnight in Hanmer.
Day 2: The Wharfedale Track, formally an old stock route, is about four hours of great riding. A reasonably challenging day, but a good warm up ride to get you into shape for the trails to come. Overnight at the Bealey Hotel in the Arthur’s Pass National Park overlooking the Waimakariri River Valley.
Day 3: A relaxed start as we drive a short distance to the Craigieburn Forest for a reasonably technical single track ride. Originally formed to walk in the rope for the ski area rope-tow lift, the trail is quite exposed and challenging but great fun. About 3-4 hours riding. Drive to Geraldine to sample a night of small town New Zealand.
Day 4: Drive/ride over the Dansey’s Pass - high country tussock land in the Kakanui mountains. This is a road less traveled but well worth the trip - mostly downhill on dirt road, then on to the ‘pot of gold at the end of the rainbow’, - single track in Naseby Forest. We can spend hours playing around some of the best single track in the south, twisting and flowing through the forest, earning a beer or two at the Hotel that is the hub of all the trails. Once a bustling mining town, Naseby now boasts that it is “2000 feet above worry level”. Dinner and overnight at the Royal Hotel Naseby.
Day 5: Ride farm and sheep tracks on a Lord of the Rings filming location, the ‘Land of Rohan’. The amazing thing about this ride is that you can look in all directions and not see a power pole, house or shed - it’s like you’re in the middle of nowhere. Overnight in the historic and charming town of Clyde.
Day 6: A leisurely breakfast before we drive to the top of the Dunstan Mountains to Leaning Rock and ride the Dunstan Traverse, a Fat Tyre Adventures specialty. Stunning barren landscapes with huge rock tors, narrow farm tracks, old gold mining water courses and 360° views. A 1700m descent with a 4-5 hour ride time. In the event of bad weather, we will ride in Bendigo – a 3-4 hour cross country ride along an old disused water race created during the gold rush of the 1870s, now surrounded by high country farm land. If we have enough energy we’ll make a few stops to sample the local Pinot Noir that the Central Otago region grows so well. Overnight in Queenstown.
Day 7: Heli-bike option day at cost price (and dependent on number of riders). Fat Tyre Adventures has a range of options best picked at the time according to weather. The alternative is some fun single track around Queenstown for the morning, leaving time to throw yourself from a bridge or some other adrenalin producing pursuit (for which Queenstown is famous). Final night of tour in Queenstown.
