Saturday, March 12th thru Saturday, March 19th, 2016
Join us for a magical week of experiencing world percussion in the tropical beauty of Boca de Tomatlan and the surrounding region of Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, with masters of drumming and percussion, Steve Leicach and Tony Vacca.

The Voice of the Drum is an inspirational, joyful, community building, noncompetitive experience. No prior drumming or musical experience is necessary. Both beginning and experienced drummers feel welcome in this spirited event. Authentic instruments such as a West African Balafon, large gongs, and smaller hand percussion instruments will be provided. Each participant needs to bring their own drum though, either a Conga drum, Djembe drum, or Ashiko drum, due to travel logistics.
Not a drummer or have a non-drumming partner, but still want to enjoy the magic of this week and ride the rhythms – no problem. Come and soak up the sounds and all the great excursions and experiences… or dance, draw, paint or move to the beat in your own way. No pressure here, (though you may end up tapping your feet, pounding a table or picking up a brush or stick and find yourself in “entrainment” without even realising it).

Join master drummers Steve Leicach and Tony Vacca for a 5 day workshop retreat of inspiring world percussion music experience in the rejuvenating and ideal environment. This exciting experience includes study in a wide spectrum of percussion music styles ranging from traditional African, Afro-Caribbean, and Brazilian drumming, to contemporary funk, jazz, and hip hop. Participants learn rhythms from indigenous people including rites of passage, planting and harvest, healing trance, as well as original funky ensemble rhythm compositions. We balance our time together by focusing on percussion rhythms and compositions, technical aspects of drumming techniques, and explorations in self -expression through drumming improvisation and creativity. Depending upon interest, participants may also choose to experience the centering and balancing energy of an etheric gong ensemble.

Throughout the week we spend the majority of our time learning and playing together in a group ensemble format, allowing for plenty of individual attention within this context. Steve and Tony will also provide special help sessions where we focus on specific skills and areas where participants need extra help and attention. Our time together is heart centered, energizing, relaxing, inspirational, and nurturing to the spirit. The Voice of the Drum reconnects us to a vibrant and primal essence of life, joyful community expression and connection, and the healing power of drumming!

This workshop retreat offers:
Traditional multi-part percussion ensemble music from indigenous people of the world
Playing techniques for hand and stick drums, Balafon, gongs, and other percussion instruments
The healing nature and trance inducing properties of drumming
Funky contemporary percussion ensemble
Songs, chants, and dances to accompany rhythms
Group and individual instruction

“It is very hard to think of anything that could improve the Casa Experience. Even when a participant chooses to depart from the program, the acceptance and willingness of our hosts to accommodate was wonderful. Don’t change a thing… On a scale of 1 to 10, an eleven would be too low! All was outstanding and wonderful.” – Ed Pulik, Washington, DC
