An opportunity to sample the delights of a British Country House over a long weekend with your friends. This holiday offers walking through an area of outstanding Natural Beauty and includes some of the finest coastal scenery in Europe. You will have the advantage of staying in a Jacobean House where the hosts will give you a warm welcome and introduce you to a quiet and relaxed lifestyle from another age.
Tour Itinerary:
Day 1: Arrive after 3pm and settle into your rooms (all with en suite or private bathrooms) at Carreg Plas, a Welsh manor house dating from 1638 and full of character and charm, which the owners open exclusively for small groups from Edge of Wales. Carreg is set in its own gardens and woods above Porth Oer/Whistling Sands, 2 miles from Aberdaron at the tip of the Llen Peninsula. Full drying facilities. You will be staying here on B&B terms which will give you opportunity in the evenings to explore the 4 restaurants which give Pen Llen such a reputation for great food at good prices. Tonight we recommend calling at our offices in Aberdaron for a welcome drink before Dinner at the nearby Ship Hotel.
Day 2: After a full Welsh cooked breakfast we will collect you in our minibus at 9.30am and drive you to an agreed point East along the Coast. You can then walk back through some of the finest coastal scenery in Britain with rocky cliffs interspersed with sandy beaches. We can provide a super packed lunch at £4 per head. Tonight we suggest Dinner at Pen Bryn Bach a celebrated local seafood restaurant on the headland 3 miles from Carreg.
Day 3: Today you can set off directly from Carreg Plas and walk through the National Trust owned headland with St Mary’s Well and its fine views of Bardsey Island before reaching Aberdaron where you can enjoy the famous 13th Century tearoom Y Gegin Fawr, the shops, and visit the recently restored St Hywyn’s Church with its exhibitions, or relax on the terrace of the Te; Newydd Hotel overlooking the beach before ordering dinner. At the end of the evening, walk back to our office and we will return you to Carreg Plas in our minibus.
Day 4: After breakfast we will drive you South East to the top of a small nearby mountain - Mynydd Rhiw, from where you can walk along the hill ridge to the National Trust house of Plas yn Rhiw exploring the haunts of the poet R.S. Thomas and then back along the south coast of Pen Llen to Aberdaron and on to Carreg. You could also call in at a very special farming development which is recreating agricultural practices and buildings from the ancient past. Tonight we recommend a short drive to Tudweiliog and a great meal at the Lion Hotel.
Day 5: After checking out of Carreg Plas you will have the option of visiting Bardsey Island some 2 miles off the tip of the peninsula. This is a beautiful place, full of wildlife and steeped in history. Visitors have 3-4 hours to explore before returning to the mainland. The cost of the return trip sea voyage is £25 per head payable to the Bardsey Island Trust, a charity that works to preserve this unique location. You will return circa 3:30pm and can then set off for home. If the weather prevents a sea crossing then there is much to see in Snowdonia on your return journey.
Notes:
Airfare is not included in the tour price.
The cost of this very special walking holiday, including welcome drink at our office, B&B at Carreg Plas (but no evening meals), transport as described and loan of maps, books and GPS kit is £170 per head for 4 nights. A three night alternative would be £129. This is intended for two to four couples but there are also some single rooms which would not incur a single supplement if they are booked in addition.
Price does not include evening meals or transport on to the Lleyn Peninsula.
