To ensure your enjoyment it is important that you possess good casting and fishing skills. The adventure is more suited for high intermediate and advanced fly fishers. The walking grade is considered easy to moderate and each angler is required to carry a day pack containing all required provisions.
Our final decision to fish here is dependent on prevailing weather conditions. For safety reasons it is imperative that conditions are considered suitable. Ideal polaroiding conditions require light winds, clear skies and plenty of sunlight.
Anglers visit this wilderness area in the hope of encountering the wild brown trout that dominate these crystal clear waters. Typical of Tasmania's wild trout stocks, these fish are cunning and strong; hardened by natural selection.
The most consistent dry fly fishing occurs from December to March. Daily catch rates are generally lower than other Highland Lakes although this is compensated by the thrilling sight fishing experience.
In suitable weather conditions this area can offer the finest sight fishing you may ever encounter.
Spring rain and snow falls help to raise water levels in most Lagoons. These newly flooded shore lines are perfect locations to find resident trout feeding with their tails and backs clear of the water. This feeding action is commonly known as tailing.
Over the warmer months throughout December to March trout can often be seen cruising over shallow sandy flats in the crystal clear waters of many lagoons. There is nothing quite like the anticipation as you watch one of these beauties rise up to eat your fly.
About Tasmania's Western Lakes
Listed as world heritage the area forms part of Tasmania's Central Highland plateau. The landscape was formed in the last glacial period and is scattered with thousands of crystal clear lagoons connected by a network of small creeks and rivers.
The area is located approximately 30 minutes West of Miena. Many lagoons can be accessed by vehicle although we prefer to focus on the hundreds of remote lakes and tarns located further a field.
