This trip starts with a scenic drive along the Glenn Highway to the community of Chitna in the Wrangell St. Elias National Park, the largest National Park in the US.This will be our starting point for this 7 day wilderness river float. The Copper River is powerful and drains an area of more than 24.000 square miles. Thirteen major tributaries contribute to its flow giving the river a swift current averaging 7-9 miles an hour. The views of the upper river are dominated by glaciated peaks of the Wrangell Mountains.
Our trip finishes at the mighty Child's glacier a towering wall of ice 300 feet high at Miles Lake. We will take a ride over the historic Million Dollar Bridge damaged by the 1964 Good Friday earthquake and spend the night in the small community of Cordova only accessible by ferry or airplanes. The next day we take the Alaska State ferry passing the mighty Columbia Glacier and across Prince William Sound back to Whittier. We drive through the railroad tunnel recently opened to traffic and make our way back to Anchorage along Turnagain Arm on the scenic Seward Highway. A visit to the small bush community McCarthy in the heart of the Wrangell St. Elias National Park and the historic Kennecott Mine can be added at an additional cost.
