The Charley River is a National Wild and Scenic River. The National Preserve encompasses 2.5 million acres. This rafting trip offers a white water experience in unspoiled and remote wilderness in Interior Alaska. The river cuts through high plateau tundra and valleys untouched by glaciation during the ice age. This is also the home and calving grounds of the Fortymile caribou herd. We have plenty of opportunity to watch wildlife. The area is wilder and less populated than it was 80 years ago during the Klondike gold rush.
Our trip starts after a landing in a small wheel plane on the primitive upper Charley landing strip. There are good hiking opportunities in the upper stretches. After the first three days on the clear and swift Charley River we join the mighty Yukon River where we get to see historic old camps and cabin sites of trappers and prospectors. We also get to see modern subsistence lifestyle with fish camps and fish wheels, fish drying racks along the Yukon River before we reach the small town of Circle. We will have time to enjoy the local culture and experience the way of life in this small community. From here we have the possibility of stopping along the way back for more sights along the route before arriving back in Fairbanks.Departure possible from Anchorage as well with two additional days for driving time.
