In 1912 a massive eruption of Novarupta Volcano, the largest of the twentieth century, shook this part of Alaska covered this entire valley and several rivers in ash up to 700 feet deep. The island of Kodiak was kept in the dark for three days from the ash in the air. The eruption could be heard as far as Juneau, Alaska's capital. After only a few years the rivers cut their way back through the ash creating cliffs and a landscape looking like the surface of the moon and like a piece of Utah in Alaska.
The trip starts with a scenic flight to King Salmon from Anchorage. Then we will take a bush plane into the famous Brooks Camp and spent a night on the campground. The next day 4x4 bus will take us down the 23 mile long gravel road to the Valley of Tenthousand Smokes. From here our adventure begins. We will hike on the ashflow and cross the river Lethe. The next 7 days we will spend exploring fumaroles, lakes, glaciers and possibly see grizzlies crossing the vally floor.
Depending on the length of trip we will have time to visit Novarupta, Mageik Lakes and ascend Mt. Mageik or one of the other easy hike up peaks. Other possibilities in the area are a traverse over Katmai Pass from the coast and a visit to the Katmai Caldera with a lake on top which requires some glacier travel and is best done in the early season when the snow bridges are still in place.
