This is one the wildest river trips Alaska has to offer and for the hardy adventurous person only. Remote wilderness, solitude, wild weather and wilder water, a float trip down the Aniakchak River is very special and only a handful of people have done it.
Our trip starts in Anchorage with a scenic flight with views of the Alaska Range and Iliamna and Redoubt volcanoes to King Salmon.
A float plane will take us to the Aniackchak Caldera once a 7000 foot mountain, now a crater 6 miles across from rim to rim. We will be dropped off inside the caldera on turquoise-coloured Surprise Lake. The latest eruption of this volcano was as recent as in 1931.
We will set up camp and have two days two explore the many lifeforms that have returned after over 70 years since the last eruption. Wildflowers bloom, bears roam the lake shore and salmon swim their way up into Surprise Lake. The next 3-5 days we spend floating down the 32 mile long Aniakchak River. We will exit the lake through a 1200 foot gap in the crater. The "Gates" and drop an average of 70 feet per mile with rocky Class II, III and IV rapids.
We will have some time to explore Aniakchak Bay which is alive with sea birds, whales, sea otters and seals.
The contrast of the coast to the vulcanic caldera is tremendous.
A float plane will pick us up at Aniakchak Bay the next day and take us back to King Salmon.
Weather can be bad with rain and wind. Winds have been known to reach 100 miles per hour. We can expect delays for landing float planes for flying in or pickup.
