The two-week study and walking tour crosses Java from West to East. We explore some of the world’s most interesting volcanoes: Krakatoa and Papandayan in West Java, Merapi in Central Java, and the Tengger caldera, Bromo, Semeru and Ijen volcanoes in East Java.

This tour combines easy to moderate excursions with a portion of luxury, and you will travel to some of Java’s most fascinating landscapes and meet its friendly and colorful people and culture. Last, but not least, adventurous camps - one on a tropical beach, one on the slope of an active volcano - as well as Indonesia’s delicious cuisine will round out the trip.

Your Itinerary:

Day 1: Arrival and meeting in Jakarta. Arrival in Jakarta, transfer to downtown hotel and group dinner. Accommodation: good mid-class hotel in Jakarta. Includes: (D).

Day 2: Jakarta-West coast. Transfer to Carita on W coast, visit of the Krakatoa volcano observatory, preparation of the expedition to Krakatau, swimming/relaxation on beach. Accommodation: Comfortable hotel/bungalows on beach. Includes: (B), (L), (D).

Day 3: Sail to Krakatau Volcano. Boat trip to Krakatoa, camp on beach on Anak Krakatoa or neighboring island, climb Anak Kraktau (if conditions allowing). Accommodation: camp on Krakatau. Includes: (B), (L), (D).

Day 4: 2nd day on Krakatau-return to coast. Second day on Krakatau for observation/visit of Anak Krakatau. After a snorkeling break at a coral reef near Rakata Island return to West coast. Accommodation: hotel or bungalow on West Coast beach.

Day 5: Transfer to Garut in West Java. Transfer day: drive through West Java to the small university town Garut in West Java. Accommodation: good mid-class hotel. Includes: (B), (L), (D).

Days 6-7: Papandayan + Galunggung volcano-Cipanas hot springs. Two full days in the beautiful volcanic area to explore hot springs and volcanic craters (Papandayan, Galunggung etc.). Accommodation: good mid-class hotel.

Day 8: Scenic train ride to Yogyakarta. Accommodation: very good mid-class hotel in downtown Yogya. Includes: (B), (L).

Day 9: Free day in Yogya. Opportunity to explore downtown Yogya (Sultan's Palace, water castle, museums, markets etc.). Optional fun city-tour on becak (rickshaws). Option to attend a Ramayana ballet performance in the evening. Accommodation: very good mid-class hotel in downtown Yogya. Includes: (B).

Day 10: Borobodur temple and Merapi Volcano. Accommodation: very good mid-class hotel in downtown Yogya. Includes: (B), (L), (D).

Day 11: Train ride to East Java, transfer to the Tengger Volcano (Bromo). Scenic train ride to Malang town, lunch. Enter into the Tengger caldera via an impressive route on open jeeps to enjoy the dramatic landscape of deep valleys and steep cliffs. Accommodation: hotel or bungalows on the rim of the Tengger caldera overlooking Bromo Volcano. Includes: (B), (L), (D).

Day 12: Bromo Volcano. Relaxed day to explore Bromo Volcano and the Tengger caldera. Accommodation: hotel or bungalows on the rim of the Tengger caldera overlooking Bromo Volcano. Includes: (B), (D).

Day 13: Sunrise excursion to overview of Bromo-rain forest of the National Park-observation of Semeru Volcano. Sunrise from the famous viewpoint overlooking the Bromo-Tengger caldera. Jeep ride to Semeru's south side and observation camp (Semeru Volcano). Accommodation: camp near Semeru Volcano. Includes: (B), (L), (D).

Day 14: Transfer to Ijen Volcano. Transfer to Ijen Plateau, coffee plantations, hot bath in nearby natural hot volcanic springs. Accommodation: guest house at coffee plantation near Ijen. Includes: (B), (L), (D).

Day 15: Kawah Ijen Volcano-transfer to Bali. Climb and visit of Ijen's crater, descend to the sulfur mining area and the turquoise acid crater lake. In the afternoon transfer to Bali. Accommodation: Excellent beach hotel on Bali. Includes: (B), (L), (D).

Day 16: End of tour or extension program on Bali. Includes: (B).

Physical requirements: The hikes in the program are fairly easy (maximum hiking efforts between 3 and 5 km distance, climbing of up to 500 m, total duration max. 3 hours) for everybody with good normal fitness. You should, however, be prepared for hot and humid climate typical for any tropical country.

Note: Depending on weather, volcanic activity, preferences of the group etc. small variations on the actual itinerary could be necessary.

Equipment:

- Good, preferably light hiking boots
- Day pack
- Light sleeping bag (if not brought, a used sleeping back can be borrowed for the night in the camp)
- Flashlight
- Sun block
- Rain and wind protection
- Warm sweater and jacket
- Light clothing most of the time
- Swimming gear
- Ski poles for hiking (optional)
- Mosquito repellent.

- Travel to and from Indonesia
- Indonesia Visa (normal 30-day tourist Visa cost currently 25 USD)
- International airport departure tax (ca. 12 USD, payable on the airport after check-in)
- Optional single room supplement: 350 EUR
- Personal travel and health insurance
- Snacks or drinks purchased outside of meals as described in the program
- Alcoholic drinks and few meals not listed in the itinerary
