Tour Itinerary:
Day 1: Head to Mbarara, where you will have dinner and a good night’s sleep at hotel Margherita.
Day 2: Wake up early and head to Nyakalengija, the trail head off Fort Portal road. From there you will go to Ibanda and start your 5-6 hour climb into the mountains. Your climb will take you through thick equatorial vegetation before arriving at the Nyabitaba hut, 2650 meters in altitude. You will have dinner at the hut, and spend a much deserved night’s rest here.
Day 3: This is the longest and most strenuous day's walk; expect it to take a minimum of seven hours. You will begin the day with breakfast at the Nyabitaba hut then go on a morning hike which will take you to the Kurt Shafer bridge. From the bridge, expect to see an exceptional view of the sparkling Mobuku river conflux. The first few hours of the hike will be the easiest; then prepare yourself for a steeper and rockier climb as you enter the moorland zone where heather plants are prolific. You will have lunch at Nyamileju, where you will find a rather run-down hut, as well as a rock shelter. This will be followed by a 2 hour walk, passing through a giant moss forest, before arriving at the John Matte hut, where you will spend the night.
Day 4: You will rise early to start your trek through the Bigo Bogs. You will pass through impressive vegetation along the way including the spiny purplish lobelia boquaerti and gigantic groundsels. This trek will take up to five hours depending on the condition of the two Bigo Bogs, which are often knee-deep in mud. On the way to the hut you will pass Lake Bujuku, which is magnificently located between Mount Stanley, Speke and Baker. You will have dinner and spend the night at the Bujuku hut, which is 3997 meters in altitude.
Day 5: You will leave early in the morning and head to the valley to begin your ascent on Mount Victoria and Mount Speke (at 4890 meters).
Day 6: Today you will depart through the gorgeous panorama of the Savoia and Elena glaciers and climb further through to the Scott Elliott pass (4372 meters) and proceed through snow to the Elena hut for overnight rest.
Day 7: You will begin the day with an early morning climb up to the snowy Alexander peak (5092m) and then move onwards to the supreme peak at 5109m. You will experience an impressive panoramic view: a great photo opportunity! From there you will descend to the beautiful Lake Kitandara for an overnight stay at the Kitandara safaris hut (3900m).
Day 8: After an early breakfast, the plunge begins! You will have a picnic luncheon on the way, after which you will have dinner at the Guy Yeoman hut and oversight's rest.
Day 9: Today you will descend to Nyabitaba and proceed to Ibanda. You will check in to hotel Margherita for overnight rest.
Day 10: Today you will head back to Kampala.
