Huayna Potosi is an aymara word which means "young mountain". Huayna Potosi is the closest high mountain to La Paz, a city which is surrounded by high mountains, and itself is the highest capital city in the world. Huayna Potosi is roughly fifteen miles due north of the city, which makes this mountain the most popular climb in Bolivia. The normal ascent route is a fairly straightforward glacier climb, with some crevasses and a steep climb to the summit.
The main reason that Huayna Potosi has been called the easiest 19.996 feet (6000m) climb is because height difference from base to top is much less than most others; also it is easily accessible from La Paz. Since La Paz lies at 3600 m, climbers who have spent time there will be more acclimatised, however no 6000 m peak can be regarded as easy - the very thin air makes progress extremely slow, even for fit climbers, and altitude sickness a strong probability.
Tour Itinerary:
Day 1: From the city of La Paz we travel to Zongo Pass (4750 m high) to an alpine style hut. We will practice mountaineering skills in the nearby glaciers for 2-3 hours.
Day 2: We climb 2 and a half hours on difficult moraines up to the toe of the glacier (5200 m high). High camp. Some porters help with extra luggage.
Day 3: 6 hour climb with 2 semi technical passages of up to 45ş steep. Descend the same day to Zongo Pass and return to La Paz.
You can take this private tour the date that you need or you can see our FIT chronogram of programmed dates for this year.
Extensions: You can ideally link it afterwards with “Trek from the high Andes to the Amazon rain forest”; and just before this climb you can do “Trek Condoriri-Huayna Potosí”.
Expedition Logistics: Level of Difficulty: On climbing we use the French alpine system : It starts at F (facile or easy), PD(peu difficile or a fairly easy), AD (assez difficile or fairly difficult), D (difficile or difficult), TD (trčs difficile or very difficult), ED (extręmement difficile or extremely difficult). They take into consideration: The technical difficulty of the hardest section of the routes which starts at over 5000 m high and acclimatization which is as important as technical ability. In trekking we consider as well those 6 difficulties explained above but we transferred the situation to the activity of the trek. The only remarkable difference exists in the altitude: The true climbing activity starts at over 5000 m high but the trekking activity runs from 1500 m high up to 5150 m high.
