Many legends exist about this lake and contribute to increase their mystery. One legend says that the lake, “the mother of all the waters”, it was formed with the tears spilled by the God Sun when the pumas devoured their children.
To slip through their waters on board a totora boat, surprising for their high resistance and in-permeability, or go for a tour around the Islands of the Sun, Moon and Suriqui. These are experiences that will make you believe in magic. As a plus, the Titikaka Lake offers the possibility to practice sports, like kayaking for those that like outdoors activities in unique scenarios.
Tour Itinerary:
Option 1: Isla Suriqui (1 Day)
Day 1: Departure to Huatajata beside to the Titikaka Lake, the trip has a duration of one hour and half. Journey to the Suriqui Island by motor boat, we find out more the way of life of the locals by visiting the island, then, return to Huatajata and lunch. Return to La Paz.
Option 2: Isla del sol (2 Days/1 Night)
When the Spanish conquest, one of the most important religious places of the Inca Empire was located in the Isla del Sol. This island represents one of the big natural and cultural monuments of the world. The archaeological evidence suggests that the sanctuary is older than the empire of Tiwanaku.
Day 1: Departure to Copacabana, 100 miles from La Paz, this town is located in the most important religious sanctuary of the area, then, we take the motor boat to Isla del Sol and lunch at the place.
Day 2: Journey around the island, then, transfer to the Isla de la Luna (additional cost). Lunch and afternoon free with optional walks: Chinkana, Pilkokaina, La roca sagrada. These constructions show how the origin of the Incas is surrounded of a series of legends; many of them are coincident pointing out to the Sun Island and Tiwanaku like the centre of the Inca State.
