Kenya and Tanzania are the quintessential African destinations and provide the ultimate birding and big-game experience. There exists nowhere else on the planet such an incredible volume and diversity of large animals; and, in addition to this, both countries each support over one thousand bird species, many of which are large, bright, colourful and easy to observe. Our safari is designed to maximize both the big game and birding experience by selecting the very best and most accessible destinations in these two vast and exciting lands.
We use a superb standard of accommodation throughout the tour and comfortable safari vehicles with pop-up roof hatches to optimize viewing. This is an incredible and immensely rewarding birding safari augmented by some of the most outstanding mammal viewing on the continent; we greatly look forward to sharing the natural wonders of East Africa with you! Our Rwanda birding and gorillas extension is a fascinating add-on to our Kenya & Tanzania birds and big game tours, and in a jam-packed week we cover this small nation from north to south and east to west. In the vast and beautiful Nyungwe Forest we will seek additional Albertine Rift endemics (notable targets include Red-collared Babbler, Kungwe Apalis, Shelley’s Crimsonwing and Albertine Owlet). In Akagera NP we bird broad-leaved woodlands and papyrus swamps for Shoebill and many other specials. Last but certainly not least, we have the opportunity to track the large Virunga race of Mountain Gorilla. Rwanda’s gorillas are generally easier to find and observe in their mostly open bamboo habitat. We will not ignore the recent tragic history of Rwanda and we pay our respects at some of Rwanda’s genocide memorials. This Rwanda tour is highly recommended.
