Our Southern Argentina tour will take us on an amazing adventure through the southern portion of this incredible continent in search for the unique Magellanic Plover at Laguna Nimez, the localized Hooded Grebe, rare White-bellied Seedsnipe on the wide-open grassy plains of northern Tierra del Fuego and the charismatic Magellanic Woodpecker.
Our journey begins in Buenos Aires where a visit to the nearby Costanera Sur Nature Reserve will provide us with our first taste of birding in Argentina. At Punta Tombo we will enjoy awesome views of thousands of endearing Magellanic Penguins, Band-tailed Eremobius (Earthcreeper), the uncommon White-throated Cacholote and Rusty-backed Monjita. The bays in this area afford us a good opportunity to see Southern Right Whale while the spectacular Valdes Peninsula is home to Killer Whale, South American Sea Lion and Southern Elephant Seal. The peninsula is also a great location for a variety of seabirds and the steppe interior holds Lesser Rhea, Elegant Crested Tinamou and Carbonated Sierra-Finch.
We will continue on to the fabulous Patagonian High Plateau where we will be searching for some extremely rare birds including Hooded Grebe and the elusive Austral Rail. We will also enjoy Glacier National Park, famous in birding circles for its population of impressive Andean Condors, the uncommon Spectacled Duck, Chilean Flicker and the strange Rufous-tailed Plantcutter. Our final site has us searching for birds in the dramatic and fabled landscapes of Tierra del Fuego. Here a visit to the national park could produce Austral Pygmy-Owl, White-throated Treerunner and the impressive Magellanic Woodpecker. In the Beagle Channel we hope for Magellanic Diving Petrel, Flying Steamer-Duck and White-throated Caracara while in the Rio Grande area we search for the rare White-bellied Seedsnipe.
This tour covers the most essential sites in the southern portion of Argentina and gives a splendid overview of the breath-taking scenery, mind-blowing birding and excellent mammal viewing that this exceptional part of the world offers.
