We offer two separate departures, run back-to-back, to give you the luxury of choosing how much of this wonderful country you would like to explore with us. The first departure takes in the desert and forest riches of the north while in the southeast we explore the lofty Andes, lowland Amazonian rain forests of famous Manu Biosphere Reserve and incomparable Machu Picchu.
Northern Peru hosts an abundance of highly sought-after endemic avifauna and combined with spectacular scenery and thriving local culture makes for a very popular tour. This tour absolutely teems with birds as we explore a wide diversity of habitats including dry deciduous forest, coastal desert, cloud forest and the unique Marañon. Our many targets include the White-winged Guan (until recently, believed to be extinct), unique Peruvian Plantcutter, beautiful Marañon Crescent-chest, and one of the most incredible birds in the world, the Marvelous Spatuletail. We will explore the woodlands, scrub and desert around Batan Grande where a number of specials are found including Tumbes Swallow, the snazzy Sulphur-throated Finch and Gray-and-white Tyrannulet.
Whilst targeting the White-winged Guan we will spend time in the canyons searching out Tumbes Hummingbird, Henna-hooded Foliage-gleaner, beautiful Elegant Crescent-chest and Cinereous Finch. We continue on towards the famous Marañon canyon in search of Chinchipe Spinetail, Marañon Chestnut-backed Thornbird, Grey-winged Inca-Finch and Buff-bellied Tanager. The brilliant and little known forests of Abra Patricia, at 1,000 to 2,200 meters, host a number of top bird species that include Ash-throated Antwren, Cinnamon-breasted Tody-Tyrant, Royal Sunangel and the scarce White-capped Tanager while in the fabulous cloud forests we will target Coppery Metaltail, White-chinned Thistletail, Yellow-scarfed Tanager, Grey-breasted Mountain-Toucan and the elegant Swallow-tailed Nightjar.
Southern Peru is a land of stark contrast and beauty and is one of the best places in South America to enjoy both the snow-capped Andes and tropical Amazon rainforest. We begin descending the eastern slope of the Andes birding through temperate zones, into mountain cloud forest, and descending to the foothills of the mighty Amazon Basin. The potential highlights for this spectacular area are enormous and in a remarkably short space of time you will encounter a typical avifauna for each area. During our week long exploration of the Andes we hope for Chestnut-breasted Mountain-Finch, Creamy-crested Spinetail, Diademed Tapaculo and the splendid Andean Cock-of-the-rock.
Continuing into the depths of the Amazon we will explore the overwhelming Manu Biosphere Reserve, one of the most important and diverse conservation units in the world. The number of star birds in this area is again overwhelming with stellar potentials including Rufous-headed Woodpecker, Manu Antbird, Elusive Antpitta, Razor-billed Curassow, Pale-winged Trumpeter, Pavonine Quetzal, Purus Jacamar, Sunbittern, Sungrebe and Agami Heron. Our tour concludes in the spectacular Andes, looking over the magical and mysterious ruins of Machu Picchu.
