New Zealand supports a host of enticing and unique land birds endemic to these islands, and is also extremely rich in seabirds and marine mammals. Beginning in Auckland we seek out the quintessential North Island Brown Kiwi among a multitude of other endemics, before embarking on our first of several pelagic trips in search of a kaleidoscope of seabirds and other marine life. Continuing to the fabled Tiritiri Matangi Island we will bird this predator-free reserve for the prehistoric Takahe and unique Stitchbird, before combing the Miranda shoreline for the bizarre Wrybill.

In stunning tree-fern forests we seek out the noisy Kaka, Kokako and tiny Rifleman. Crossing onto the South Island we visit Motuara Island Bird Sanctuary, where the dazzling Saddleback and cute New Zealand Robin will entertain us, before we embark on another pelagic adventure into the fantastic upwellings of Kaikoura. Here we will search for an abundance of albatross, shearwaters and petrels. Traveling across the South Island we will look for Weka (a flightless rail) and the sought-after Great Spotted Kiwi, before passing through pristine Red Beech forests and high mountains lined by glaciers where the amazing Kea can be found.

The World Heritage Site of Milford Sound allows us dramatic views as we climb aboard the ‘Milford Mariner’ searching for the rare Fiordland Penguin. Finally after seeking out difficult species including New Zealand Rockwren, Blue Duck and New Zealand Falcon, we will ferry to the wild and rugged Stewart Island where we hope to finish off our collection of endemics. A final pelagic trip, visiting several nearby islands is a highlight of any New Zealand birding voyage. The lodging and meals are superb throughout the tour and the “Kiwis” are fantastically friendly!
