An excellent combination of nature, beaches, history and heritage. The accommodation is very varied from old hotels, restored with respect, to country inns and an old fashioned boarding house surrounded by fields. This tour is not challenging, and several stages may be shortened by using the train.
The major attractions on this tour are Copenhagen, Hamlet's castle Kronborg, the modern art museum Louisiana, the Viking Ship Museum in Roskilde and the National Museum at the beautiful castle Frederiksborg.
Your Intinerary:
Day 1: Copenhagen
Arrival in Copenhagen. There are two hotels to choose from, either a city center hotel (Copenhagen Strand) or a hotel in a quiet suburb Gentofte, 8 Kilometres (5 miles) from the center. In Copenhagen do have a stroll on Strøget, the long pedestrian street. Here you will find the old medieval part of Copenhagen, as well as many excellent restaurants.
Day 2: Helsingor
Ahead of you on the first day of bicycling lies a pleasant ride out of Copenhagen (on bicycle paths) towards Helsingor. Enjoy Dyrehaven, the royal hunting ground on your left, and the view of the sea - Sweden towering in the distance - on your right. You will be riding near the coast all day. At Rungsted you can visit the home of the famous Danish author Karen Blixen (Isak Dinesen). Louisiana, the museum in Humlebæk, enjoying world acclaim for its exhibitions of modern art as well as for its picturesque location, is definitely worth a stop. The night is spent in Helsingor.
Day 3: Hillerod
A day of castles! When in Helsingør visit Hamlet's castle Kronborg. After that, a lovely ride down to Fredensborg - Lots of time on your hands, fresh air and beautiful countryside all around you. Continue to Hillerød. The night is spent at a modern hotel near the famous castle Frederiksborg Castle.
Day 4: Hundested
If you have saved the visit of Frederiksborg Castle until today, you will have enough time to explore the unique interior of the castle, located in the middle of a lake, surrounded by baroque gardens. Then continue through the forest and fields on a paved cycle route to Ramløse and the lake Arresø. On the way to Hundested there is an excellent opportunity for a swim at the Northern Sealand beaches. Spend the night in Hundested.
Day 5: Skudelev
Go through the idyllic fishing hamlet Lynæs to the small ferryboat at Sølager (if the ferry is not operating, a different route will be used). Once on the other side of the fjord continue through the forest Nordskoven, famous for its old oak trees. Coming out of the forest you will see the castle Jægerspris Slot. The night will be spent in the small village Skuldelev.
Day 6: Roskilde
Visit the beautifully restored manor house Selsø Slot. Continue through forest land and undulating fields to the open-air museum Lejre where you can experience daily life from Iron-Age to Viking-Age. On to Roskilde, the former Danish capital. In the large cathedral the kings and queens of Denmark are buried. The Vikings lived at Roskilde and their ships can still be seen here. You will spend the night in the center of Roskilde.
Day 7: Copenhagen
Back to Copenhagen or Gentofte. Through picturesque villages to the beaches south of the capital. A path takes you along the coast away from traffic, all the way into the center of Copenhagen.
