Iceland's historic capital of Reykjavik is where you will begin and end this spectacular circle tour through the most magnificent natural sights that Iceland has to offer. At your hotel you will receive a private rental car, which you will drive across picturesque villages, past waterfalls, hot springs, geysers, and ancient Icelandic sights. See the shores of Hunafloi Bay, the towering mountains and horse-breeding valleys of Skagafjodur, and the natural wonders of Lake Myvatn, including fantastic lava formations. Explore the spectacular Eastern Fjords, where mountains plunge vertically into the ocean and then drive to shimmering icebergs and lagoons. You will be awed by the spectacular southern coast, a sweeping landscape of sandy desert, rocky shores and rolling farmland sandwiched between snow-capped glaciers, mountains and the ocean.
Your Itinerary:
Day 1: Reykjavik
Transfer to your hotel by Flybus.
Day 2: Hveragerdi - Geysir - Thingvellir - Borgarfjordur
Accomodation: Foss Hotel Bifrost
Drive across Hellisheidi to the greenhouse village of Hveragerdi. Continuation to the waterfall Gullfoss and the hot springs at Geysir. Thingvellir, site of the ancient Icelandic parliament, and through Hvalfjordur or Kaldidalur highland pass (4WD needed) to Borgarfjordur.
Day 3: Borgarfjordur - Skagafjordur - Akureyri
Accomodation: Edda Hotel
Drive north through Borgarfjordur, to the shores of Hunafloi Bay and the towering mountains and horse-breeding valleys of Skagafjordur. On to Akureyri.
Optional: River rafting, Horse riding in Skagafjordur.
Day 4: Akureyri - Lake Myvatn
Accomodation: Sel Hotel Myvatn
A morning in Akureyri, the capital of the North. After a stop in the town, onwards to the Lake Myvatn area.
Day 5: Lake Myvatn
Accomodation: Sel Hotel Myvatn
Exploring the natural wonders of Lake Myvatn and the surrounding area, including fantastic lava formations. Visit to the volcanic area of Krafla along with the colorful sulfurous slopes of Namaskaro pass.
Day 6: Lake Myvatn - Husavik - Egilsstadir
Accomodation: Icelandair Hotel Herad
Drive north to the fishing port of Husavik and around Tjornes peninsula. Asbyrgi, a magnificent horseshoe-shaped canyon, and Jokulsargljufur National Park. Proceeding to Dettifoss, Europe's mightiest waterfall, before heading across the highland plateau to Egilsstadir.
Day 7: Egilsstadir - Hofn
Accomodation: Fosshotell Vatnajokull
Drive south through the spectacular Eastern fjords, where towering, terraced mountains plunge vertically into the ocean and on to the town of Hofn in Hornafjordur, gateway to the south coast.
Optional: Petra's stone collection, boat tour to Papey island.
Day 8: Hofn - Skaftafell National Park - Kirkjubaejarklaustur
Accomodation: Icelandair Hotel Klaustur
Drive to the shimmering icebergs and still, milky waters of Jukulsarlon glacial lagoon before continuing to Skaftafell National Park. On to the picturesque village of Kirkjubaejarklaustur.
Optional: Boat tour on Jukulsrlon, Ice climbing in Skaftafell area.
Day 9: Kirkjubaejarklaustur - Reykjavik
Accomodation: Icelandair Loftleidir Hotel
Drive along the spectacular southern coast, a sweeping landscape of sandy desert, rocky shores and rolling farmland sandwiched between snow-capped glaciers, mountains and the ocean. Return to Reykjavik.
Day 10: Reykjavik - Keflavik
Departure by Flybus to airport.
Optional: Whale watching from Husavik.
