After 2,5 hours flight from Puerto Montt we arrive in Punta Arenas, the southernmost city on the American continent. A city surrounded by myths dating back to the time when the shipping routes lead through the Magellan Strait in order to reach the West coast of America. Myths from the time, when the colonization of Patagonia and Tierra del Fuego with sheep farmers could no longer be prevented and when the habitat of the vulnerable indigenous cultures were destroyed. From a time, when Darwin and before him Francis Drake shipped through the Beagle channel and Darwin dwelled on his evolutionary theory.
The principal cemetery of the city tells all these stories and is testimony of the wealth that was accumulated by two families who reigned like kings over this remote region.
We visit a fortification dating back to the early years of the Spanish occupation of the strait and visiting a colony of penguins we can closely observe these funny animals in their natural environment.
Puerto Natales is the starting point for our tour to the Torres del Paine National Park, which has been declared a specially protected biosphere reserve by UNESCO.
This spectacular mountain range, formed by the activity of the glaciers is an absolute must for everybody who loves trekking in virgin nature. During the four days we spend in the park, the breathtaking scenery as well as the glacier lakes and the fantastic fauna such as Guanacos and foxes form an unique background for our trekking tour.
We hike to the Grey Glacier, which forms the end of the biggest continental glacier field (Campo de Hielos Sur). We see broken-off ice-floes swimming on Lake Grey and we hike through southern beech forest populated by Magellan woodpeckers.
Every winter the forces of nature change the landscape in this area, and we can observe this process "live" during our trekking tour.
We then continue our tour by zodiacs on the Serrano River to visit the cabin of a real pioneer. Our visit will only shortly interrupt the solitude of this man and we then continue on board of a cutter called 21 De Mayo to get to the Balmaceda and Serrano Glaciers. After a short hike to the Serrano glacier we board once more the cutter and return to Puerto Natales crossing the Fjord of the Last Hope.
From Puerto Natales we drive to Punta Arenas in time to catch our flight back to Santiago.
