From its mountain passes one can descend through the lush semitropical valleys of the Yungas along some of the most impressive and well preserved pre-Colombian roads of South America, such as the well-known Choro and Takesi Trails.
Tour Itinerary - Choro Trail (moderately difficult):
Day 1: Private transportation to the Pass (Cumbre) (4,650 meters above sea level) where the hike will begin. The descent is via a magnificent Inka stone road until you reach Callapampa (3,200 meters altitude).
Day 2: The descent continues through Choro where you will begin to feel the warmth of the semi-tropical climate of the Yungas.
Day 3: You will continue to hike along the Inka route through coca, fruit and coffee plantations and Inka terraces. We will camp at Sandillani in the garden of a Japanese hermit.
Day 4: Arrive at the town of Chairo in the morning. From here you can choose public or private transportation to Corioco or La Paz.
Tour Itinerary - Trekking Takesi Trail (Easy hike):
Day 1: Private transportation to the San Francisco Mine. Ascent to the Takesi Pass at (4,650 meters altitude) and descending then to the town of Takesi, via a magnificent pre-Hispanic trail. Camp overnight at 3,700 meters.
Day 2: Descend along the trail through fields of ferns, many varieties of flowers, dwarf orchids and begonias to the lower warmer altitude.
Day 3: Arrive at the Chojlla Mine before noon and then hike on to the town of Yanacachi. From here, there will be transportation back to La Paz.
This hike is ideal for those who do not want a difficult walk. However, good walking boots are a must.
Coroico, a population of Aymaran origin, includes the presence of African Bolivian groups. The scenery combines green hillsides, cliffs, rivers, waterfalls and an exuberant vegetation.
Tour Itinerary - Coroico:
Day 1: Leave to Coroico via La Cumbre pass (4650 masl) descending in two hours to the Valley of Yungas (1700 masl). Enjoy magnificent views on the way, through a great highway with over 40 bridges and tunnels that manage to dominate the steep topography. Arrive to Coroico at noon. Lunch and hotel accommodation. In the afternoon, take a short walk to visit coca, coffee and fruit plantations. Enjoy the walk through boasting vegetation and amazing scenarios.
Day 2: Free morning, enjoy the clime, the swimming pool and peacefulness. In the afternoon, return to La Paz.
Coroico: Full Day. (11 hours) Same as Day 1 on previous program, returning to La Paz at 16:00
Ideal if you wish: Resting in a pleasant little town with stupendous views.
Down-hill Mountain Biking. (13 hours) Descend through the old road to Coroico, the most risky and exciting road in the world. An unbelievable and incredible descent from 4650 mt of altitude, until you reach 1300 m. After the exciting descent and with all the adrenaline running through your body, rest in Coroico and return to La Paz. Average experience is needed in conduction in bicycles.
