The Douro Region was the world’s first demarcated wine region in 1756. The river valley possesses a high potential to become a unique tourist destination due to its diversity and natural and cultural heritage. Douro is a landscape which is both natural and molded by men, cultures, quietness and peacefulness, the Wine, the river and the old villages.
Between Barqueiros and Barca d’Alva the wild valley slopes were tamed by terraces of Port vines. Pinhão railway station is decorated with “azulejos”, fine blue tiles, illustrating the sites and the traditional costumes of the valley. The road follows the valley between schist slopes which have been terraced and contained by small dry stone walls.
There are numerous sign-posted viewpoints where we can appreciate the surrounding natural beauty, while many manor houses and country estates have been converted to offer fine accommodation. We invite you to sleep on enveloped by the seductiveness of nature under fabulous views out over the Douro provided by Solares de Portugal, and visit the farms producing the rich nectars of this region.
By the end of the spring, the banks of the river are involved in the white mists of flowering almond trees. By the end of the summer, the sun’s warmth begins to mature the grapes and the vines become replete in their golden and ruby fruits. It’s harvest time.
And last but not least, at Vila Nova de Gaia wine cellars, taste the Port and learn about the stages involved in its production. Old traditions highlight the symbiosis between river, land and wine, men and nature.
