This region is also miles and miles of coastline with splendid long beaches, peaceful coves, inlets and quaint old fishing villages. Inland, magnificent landscapes offer the unique Portuguese National Park, the Peneda-Gerês, with its majestic mountains, peaceful forests and fresh rivers.
The catholic religion is deeply rooted in the costumes and traditions, as we can find an endless number of monasteries, churches and chapels. Minho’s artistic heritage includes Roman ruins, medieval walled towns and venerable castles, rustic churches and sumptuous cathedrals. Take a walk among the streets of the historical centre of Guimarães, the cradle of the Portuguese nation. Watch how the ancients lived at Citânia de Briteiros, before the Romans arrived to this region about 200 years BC.
It’s marvelous to watch the stateliness of the Sé de Braga or the Bom Jesus’s staircase, the path usually taken by pilgrims. The wonderful historical centre of Guimarães is considered World Heritage and Ponte de Lima, the oldest Portuguese village, also known as the “garden of Portugal”. Viana do Castelo, besides its historical centre, is one of the most charming and welcoming cities in Portugal. The Santiago Portuguese pathway that is still used by thousands of pilgrims, starts precisely at Porto city, crosses Minho region through Barcelos and Ponte de Lima, until the Spanish border in Valença do Minho.
