If going deep means adventure, you've found it, have a hearty breakfast and you're away rafting on the grade 3/4 waters of the mighty Mokihinui River. Drive deep into the backwoods, eat award winning meals, sip on the regions finest wines, and enjoy a whitewater rafting trip on the best river the top of the south island has to offer. Any direction you listen or look, you're immersed in the native wilderness of the West Coast.
The Mokihinui is an excellent Grade 3-4 rafting experience. Our guests are in a unique situation to enjoy a full day on the river; after breakfast, your helicopter collects you for a scenic flight to the Mokihinui Forks, we take you on a 6-8 hour adventure down a 16 km wilderness gorge, ending up directly at the lodge for a hot shower and cold beverage! There's no other place in the South Island as beautifully situated for more rafting and less logistical hassle than Rough and Tumble. We love this trip because it's accessible to most abilities and has a great mix of exciting rapids and calm stretches during which you can relax and enjoy this remarkable environment. Excellent group booking discounts available.
This river is situated on the northern west coast, excellent trout fishing and continuous grade IV rafting with the occasional grade V rapid make it one of our personal favorites. We enjoy it so much we have our end of season staff and friends trip on this most excellent river. The upper section of the first day has non-stop action with pool drop rapids, steep and technical. The second day sees the river double in volume when the south branch of the Mohikinui River joins the North Branch. The lower section has big volume rapids with some big waves and a few chunky drops. Riverside camping in the evenings and a beer at the local pub at the finish as we check out the video of the past few days.
Note: Minimum age of 13 years, and able to swim. No experience necessary.
