Full day tour, including visits to the colorful Pisac Indian Market and the Ollantaytambo Fortress. At a lower elevation than Cuzco (8,500 feet) we will barely feel the elevation and will begin to acclimatize while doing some easy birding. The Urubamba Valley or Sacred Valley of the Incas, is the historic heart of the Inca Empire. It was intensively cultivated with terraces increasing its harvest several fold. Small villages lined the valley floor, while the stone fortresses of Ollantaytambo and Pisac served the dual purpose of providing protection and serving as religious centers. Good birds to find in the gardens are Hummingbirds: Giant Hummingbird, Green-tailed Hummingbird, Green-tailed Trainbearer, etc. Overnight Hotel in Sacred Valley. Includes: (B), (L), (D).
Day 3: Sacred Valley. Breakfast in the hotel. Full day Abra Malaga, located at 14,200 feet, is the lowest point along a ridge of rugged peaks; buffering the upper limits of these habitats is the starkly beautiful puna grassland dotted with llamas, alpacas and the very occasional cluster of stone houses, corrals and fences erected by Quechua-speaking families who are somehow accustomed to prospering in what seems to most visitors an inhospitable environment. The bird life includes many endemic species that live in a small geographic area in southern Peru or limited to southern Peru and nearby Bolivia. Overnight Hotel in Sacred Valley. Includes: (B),(L),(D).

At the edge of the scrub we will look for flushes of gray and white indicating the presence of Bearded Mountaineer, a large and patterned hummingbird endemic to a small area in southern Peru.
