The coastline of the Otago Peninsula which surrounds the Dunedin harbor is spectacular with both sandstone and basalt cliffs with volcanic rock formations leading down to the sand dunes and deserted beaches. Royal Albatross, fur seals, sea lions, shags, penguins, wading birds and native bush make Dunedin and the Peninsula an attractive destination in all seasons.
Tour Itinerary:
Day 1: Arrive Nisbet Cottage. Overnight Nisbet Cottage.
Day 2: Sunrise Penguin Walk (or day 3): An early start to observe Yellow-Eyed Penguins at sunrise: walk along a remote beach, listen to the sounds of nature, and observe these rare birds on their daily journey to the sea. The tour involves a 20 minute walk each way (to the hide and back) and a climb up the sand dune on your way back. A reasonable level of fitness is required for this. Return to Nisbet Cottage for a hot shower and a relaxed breakfast.
- Full-day tour of Dunedin and Otago Peninsula
10 am: Depart Nisbet Cottage with your nature guide for a brief tour around Dunedin before heading out to Otago Peninsula via the high road. Depending on tide and season we will see a variety of birds e.g. pied stilt, white faced heron, oyster catchers, spoonbills and arctic waders feeding at Hoopers Inlet. We will take a walk at a remote beach to see the local wildlife and enjoy picnic lunch there if the weather permits. Further along the Otago Peninsula, at Taiaroa Head, is the only mainland breeding colony of Royal Albatross. Join a one-hour guided tour of the albatross colony or enjoy viewing albatrosses in flight on a one-hour harbor cruise. 4-5 pm: Arrive back at Nisbet Cottage.
