One of Italy's best-kept secrets? If you are looking for dramatic views, stunning sunsets, copious amounts of fine food and wine, hiking for all ability levels and a combination of Germanic precision and Italian flair, the Dolomites are probably what you are looking for. With kilometers of well-maintained trails, friendly, comfortable mountain huts, and geological wonders such as karstic plateau and towering rock faces, our walks are as diverse as the cultures and languages of the Dolomites.
GROUP DEPARTURE:
June 28 - July 05, 2009
August 01 - 08, 2009
September 05 - 12, 2009
South Tyrol, which the Austrians had to cede to Italy after loosing WWI, has been a major battle ground with fortified tunnels and mountain-top gun emplacements, that can still be seen in the mountains today. Despite first-class infrastructure and with major international airports a few hours away, the Dolomites still see far fewer visitors than one would expect.
Our hikes have been chosen for the diversity of the terrain and to incorporate the rich and complex history of this region. Starting in Castelrotto (Kastelruth), our traverse will take in the most important peaks and hikes on offer.
Tour Itinerary:
Day 1: Arrival day. Transfer from Bozen (airport or train station) to Castelrotto. Briefing and welcome dinner with your guides.
Day 2: Rosengarten - Antermoja. We’ll start the day with a quick transfer to the Alpe di Siusi (Seiser Alm). From there, we start our hike up to the Rifugio Alpe di Tires (2550m), where we will stay for a hearty South Tyrolean lunch, before we continue to the Cima Scalieret (2890m). The views across the Dolomites are breathtaking, the majestic towers of Vajolet are nearby, and so is the famous Rosengarten. After ample time for enjoying the scenery, we will start our descent to the Rifugio Antermoja, situated at the lake of the same name. We will stay here for the night. Enjoy the alpine sunset in front of the hut! Walking time: 6 hours.
Day 3: Alpe die Siusi – Sassolungo. The early morning sees us walking down the picturesque Val Duron. After a short climb and a traverse along the Alpe di Siusi we will reach the Rifugio Sassopiatto. From here we have two options: If you are feeling strong today, you can continue up to the summit of Sassopiatto at 2965m. For something more relaxing, continue down to the Sella Pass, until we reach the Rifugio Friedrich-August, our cozy mountain inn for the night. Walking time: 5-6 hours
Day 4: The Sella Group. Today we will be traversing the famous Sella Group and climb Piz Boe (3150m). Again, we have two options: Hike up the Val Lasties to the summit, or take the cable car to Sasso Pordoi which makes for faster and easier access. The descent leads us through a beautiful valley full of wildflowers down Corvara for a well-deserved drink. Walking time: 5-7 hours
Day 5: Sasso della Croce – Fanes. A short taxi drive brings us to Pedraces. A pleasant chairlift ride through pine forests brings us to the chapel of Sasso della Croce (2005m). A steep but rewarding climb brings us to Sasso della Croce (2610m). After that, a gentle hike in Fanes Nature Park will lead us to our mountain hut for the night: Rifugio Lavarella-Fanes. Walking time: 5 hours.
Day 6: Fanes Valley – Cortina d’Ampezzo. A two-hour climb through the scenic Fanes valley of the wildly beautiful Val Travenanzes will lead us to the Valle di Landro, right above Cortina d’Ampezzo, where we will spend the night. You will have plenty of time to stroll through the streets of Cortina, and explore the charming town, which is a famous Italian ski resort. Walking time: 5-6 hours.
Day 7: Tre Cime. A short drive to Misurina will bring us to the foot of the majestic Tre Cime, possibly the Dolomites most famous peaks. After admiring the views and eating a hearty lunch we will descend the Val Fiscalina to Sexten/Sesto. After some free time for a glass of wine or cappuccino we will head back to Castelrotto for the night.
Day 8: Departure Day. Transfer of all guests to the train station or airport in Bozen.
