Tour Itinerary:
Day 1: Hobart to Hamilton 75km. Leaving the beautiful port of Hobart, with Mt Wellington on your left, we follow the Derwent River dotted with bright spinnakers, past gracious buildings and colonial villages like Norfolk, similar to what you would expect from the English countryside. Hamilton is a real hamlet, with historic B&B’s, old English pub, and cute little cottages, refurbished to retain their historic feel.
Day 2: Hamilton to Derwent Bridge 102km. The country is stunning with tall golden poplars lining the rivers, numerous bridges over crystal clear creeks, power stations blocking deep gorges that create massive dams, and the odd hill or two to keep your muscles pumping. Lake St Clair Interpretation Centre is alive with wildlife, scenery and water, just waiting for a tired cyclist to revive those aching legs, before relaxing in front of the open fire.
Day 3: Derwent Bridge to Queenstown 88km. Surrounded by small mountains and rugged countryside we enter the southern end of Cradle Mountain National Park and cross Collingwood & Franklin Rivers. Immerse yourself in Tasmanian wilderness with a stroll to Nelson Falls, before crossing Lake Bradbury and Mt Owen and preparing for the magnificent view and descent into the unique landscape of Queenstown, a copper mine town stripped of its foliage.
Day 4: Queenstown to Strahan 37km. We leave the stark bare hills of this old copper mining town and cycle through undulating thick bush to the beautiful Strahan port. An easy day, leaving plenty of time to enjoy a complimentary yacht cruise, with lunch on Macquarie Harbour. The afternoon is free to enjoy before a complimentary ticket to a real live performance, “The Ship That Never Was” before dinner on the wharf.
Day 5: Strahan to Tullah 89km. An easy ride through bush skirting the Southern Ocean, with magnificent views over the ocean. Zeehan and Rosebery are both mining towns and cradled in the veins of some serious hill climbing, both up and down, finishing at waters edge. This magnificent overnight stay overlooking the lake is your chance to cool off, go for a swim, sunbathe or perhaps socialize in the bar.
Day 6: Tullah to Cradle Mountain 62km. Lake Rosebery is low, so we have some climbing through incredibly stunning countryside, stopping along the way to rest, eat and observe the sights of giant bleached white trees, dead for perhaps 50 years, still standing proud amongst a carpet of lime green moss and colourful undergrowth. Don’t forget to see and perhaps walk around Dove Lake, in the shadows of Cradle Mountain. Exquisite scenery.
Day 7: Cradle Mountain to Devonport 87km. It should be all downhill, but it's not, however it's a fast ride with breath taking scenery on both sides. Sheffield township is coated in murals of local life then it's the home straight to Devonport and the finish of a cross country cycling classic.
