We stay at the beautifully restored private accommodation at Château Pichon Longueville Baron, 2ieme Cru Classé, which has been elegantly furnished with classical decor.
On our first evening we dine at Pichon-Longueville. Next morning we’ll learn how the wines we have tasted at dinner have been made by visiting the cellars. We then cross the road for lunch at Pichon-Longueville Comtesse de Lalande. Part of this vineyard lies in St Julien, giving the wine a more opulent and feminine character than a Pauillac but richer than a St Julien.
This afternoon’s visit and tasting is at one of the two Pauillac chateaux to be awarded Premier Cru status in 1855, Château Lafite-Rothschild. This evening we dine as guests at Château Léoville Barton, who we specially enjoy visiting and where we are always welcomed by a family member. Léoville and Langoa-Barton are the only chateaux from the 1855 classification of the Médoc that are still owned by the original family.
Our first visit the following day takes us to the great Château Latour, the other Pauillac chateau to be recognized as a first growth in 1855. Here we will enjoy a visit of their beautifully designed modern winery before enjoying a tasting in their state of-the-art tasting room, all housed within the original classical buildings, alongside the eponymous tower.
Lunch today is at the two starred Michelin restaurant Château Cordeillan-Bages where you will enjoy dishes prepared by chef Thierry Marx. After lunch we visit Château Mouton Rothschild. Mouton was elevated to 1st Growth status in 1973 from its original 2nd growth position and was the first wine ever to have a different artist designed label for every vintage.
The next day we experience the exquisite wines of Château Margaux in their Palladian style chateau. It is said that Château Margaux typifies the wines of its commune more than any other of the 1st Growths. Our lunch is at Château Climens, Barsac. For many this is the Sauternes’ best wine after d’Yquem, which we will visit briefly after lunch.
Our last dinner will be at Pichon-Longueville. The final visit is to Château Haut-Brion, the only non-Médoc chateau to be awarded First growth status in 1855. Situated in Bordeaux, Haut-Brion is undoubtedly one of the oldest wine chateaux in the region and even with the city of Bordeaux expanding around it continues to produce truly outstanding wines. After this we take you into Bordeaux and you can enjoy a final lunch together with James Lawther.
