The Maratakka River is a narrow winding jungle river. Final destination is Mauritie Sabana, an area known as a breeding area for macaws and parrots. Overnights in a small jungle camp, consisting of three open huts built according to amerindian model, in the middle of the jungle. The area is known for the occurrence of many species of wildlife including: mammals (monkeys, swamp otters, agoutis, peccaries), birds (various species of parrots and macaws and numerous other birds) as well as reptiles (turtles and tortoises, caiman and snakes). The vegetation shows a great variation from swamps, savanna land to primary rainforest.
Your Itinerary
Day 1:
Paramaribo - Wageningen. We leave early in the morning, on our way to Wageningen in Western Suriname. Underway we stop at interesting sites. When we arrive in Wageningen we check in the hotel. From Wageningen there is occasion to go for a ride to Nw. Nickerie an enjoy the sunset over the Corantyne mouth.

Day 2:
Wageningen - Maratakka. We leave from Wageningen, as soon as we've loaded the boat, for our journey on the Maratakka river on our way to the jungle camp Den Feyfi. On the river we have the best chance for animal sightings. We take our time.

Day 3:
Awara Sabana. In the morning we leave from the base camp Den Feyfi for a long hike. We pass by different types of vegetation: Low savanna forest; swampy forest; primary rainforest; savanna grassland and shrub. We return in the late afternoon on the camp. Much of what we encounter depends on the season and the presence. In the evening we may, weather permitting, go on the river insearch of caiman and other jungle nightlife.

Day 4:
Mauritie Savanna. We leave early in the morning by boat for Mauritie Savanna. As we progress on the river it gets narrower and narrower, untill at last trees overgrow the river. If we are lucky we may experience a close encounter with jungle life. At last, when we reach Mauritie Savanna we will be surprised by the change of scenery and the sheer beauty of the Savanna spickled with Mauritie palms with a backdrop of undulating rainforest. If we are lucky we may be welcomed by blue-and-yellow or blue-cheeked macaws that fly noisily overhead.

Day 5:
Maratakka rivier - Wageningen - Paramaribo. We leave the camp on the Maratakka in the early morning.On the Maratakka there is always a chance that we meet with something either in the water or on the banks. In Wageningen we get on the bus headed for Paramaribo.
