In addition to the coral, prolific sponges, sea fans, and other gorgonians offer the snorkeler lush vistas filled with color and texture. The Bay Islands were originally part of British Honduras, and consequently have a culture much different than mainland Honduras. To better appreciate these distinctions, our program concludes with a two-night excursion to the Mayan archeological site and highland town of Copan.

Your Itinerary

Day 1: Group flight from Houston to San Pedro Sula, transfer to the next flight to Roatan and our resort, our home for the next 6 nights. Welcome drinks, orientation and dinner. Includes: (D)

Day 2: Program orientation, guidelines for snorkeling in Roatan's National Park, an overview of this week's activities. After lunch, snorkeling followed by an official "welcome cocktail party" and dinner. Includes: (B) (L) (D)

Day 3: The mornings and afternoons are devoted to snorkeling. From our chartered boat, we plan to visit Roatan's most exciting underwater sites. We have also planned two half-day island tours of Roatan to visit a Garifuna fishing village, the Institute of Marine Sciences for a platform session with dolphins, West Bay Beach etc. Includes: (B) (L) (D)

Day 4: The marine biology of Fiji offers an incredible variety of fish, coral, and a profusion of invertebrates. Huge flat-topped coral heads called "bommies" rise from the deep to within a few feet of the surface, which along with the protected interiors of barrier reefs, make Fiji one of the world's great snorkeling venues. Includes: (B) (L) (D)

Day 5: In contrast with the Caribbean, Fiji's reefs offer prolific soft corals, presenting the snorkeler with resplendent views of brilliant reds, yellows, and pinks. While the Caribbean has 68 species of coral, the South Pacific boasts over 700 (so far) and over 3000 species of fish. Striped, spotted, dappled, and dotted, these fish come in colors and shapes only nature could inspire. We will use our chartered boat to visit Roatan's most exciting underwater sites. Includes: (B) (L) (D)

Day 6: Unique creatures that we can expect to see include lion fish with their elegant plume-like fins, amusing and very approachable clownfish in their host anemones, crown of thorns starfish, brilliantly colored and patterned butterfly fish, triggerfish, and wrasse, plus the possibility of manta rays, schooling barracudas, and the occasional reef shark. Includes: (B) (L) (D)

Day 7: Transfer from Roatan to Copan Ruinas by plain and air-conditioned van. After lunch we begin our explorations of the archeological sites. Includes: (B) (L) (D)

Day 8: Today we offer morning and afternoon guided tours that include an exploration of the Mayan Ruins of Copan and the Sculpture museum. Includes: (B) (L) (D)

Day 9: After breakfast, we transfer to the international airport in San Pedro Sula (by A.C.-van) to depart on our international flight back home. Includes: (B)
