Nestled deep in the coastal Siskayou Mountains of Southern Oregon, the Rogue River runs through a canyon of great beauty, warm whitewater, abundant wildlife, and is rich in history. The rapids are classic and are perfect for first-time rafters, families, and experienced river runners.
The canyon walls are blanketed with pine and oak forest and smooth walls of rock and rounded boulders create mini-canyons along the rivers edge. Wildlife abounds throughout the canyon, you may see a bald or golden eagle soaring overhead, a blue heron gliding to its favorite fishing rock, or an osprey arrowing into the river in hopes of a meal. River otter are often frolicking near the shore and you could see a black bear peering from the trees as you glide by, or deering grazing near the waters edge.
The rapids on the Rogue are exhilarating yet forgiving, there are over 80 class III rapids and other riffles splashed throughout this canyon. Narrow chutes, big waves, rock gardens and escalator drops are just a few that you may encounter during a day. We provide three types of boats from which you may experience these rapids; paddle boats, oar boats, and inflatable kayaks. Paddle boats are the boats of choice for those seeking an active, hands-on adventure. A paddle captain calls out commands to the paddle team, usually 4-6 people, and all aboard help to steer the boat down the river. The oar boats carry both passengers and gear and are perfect for those wishing to focus on the scenery and wildlife. The inflatable kayaks are for the more intrepid individuals who wish to experience the river on a more personal level. These sleek boats allow the paddler to navigate the waves and channels of the river while under the watchful eye of a nearby guide.
Your Itinerary
Day 1: Your trip leader and river shuttle vehicle will meet you just downstream of the Galice Resort early in the morning on the first day of your rafting trip. After a brief introduction, the trip leader will distribute waterproof "dry" bags. You'll then pack your camp clothes, sleeping bag, etc., into the dry bag (keep any items you want during the day out of this dry bag, as we have separate "day" dry bags). After packing your dry bag we provide breakfast at the Galice Resort, answer any last minute questions you may have and make sure your car is parked in the appropriate parking area. We then board the shuttle vehicle for the short, scenic drive to the rafting launch point. Here, you participate in a thorough instructional and safety presentation. Then, it is on to the river! Fun whitewater, peaceful calms and magnificent scenery will fill your senses and a gourmet deli-style lunch will fuel your system for the afternoon of rafting. After the initial stretch of river, we reach Rainie Falls , a thundering drop that we skirt by walking around or by running a sneak channel, depending on water levels. More phenomenal rapids and scenery are found below Rainie Falls before reaching camp later in the afternoon. We make camp on a sandy beach or forest meadow, enjoy an afternoon snack and unwind as the guides make the first of many delicious dinners. In the evening we listen to the river and share tales of the Rogue as twilight consumes the canyon.
Subsequent Days (The number of days depends on your trip length).
For Camp Trips: Each day on the Rogue follows a similar routine although no two days are alike. Breakfast, a multi-course affair with hot cowboy coffee or campfire cocoa is served as the sun rises in the canyon. After breaking camp and loading the rafts, we run rapid after exhilarating rapid, drift through idyllic calms, marvel at the rock formations, watch eagle and osprey as they circle overhead, as well asenjoy the scenic wilderness. Depending on the day, we may visit Zane Grey's former writing getaway, hike up to one of the many side creek waterfalls or visit a remote wilderness lodge. Lunch is set up each day around noon with more than enough delicious food to energize you for the afternoon's rafting. In the late afternoon we set up camp in another beautiful wild place. The early evening hours provide time to fish, hike, read a book, enjoy happy hour snacks and beverages or take a nap. Dinner, in all of its glory, is prepared and served with style and flair. You will eat to your stomach's content meals that have been labeled as the finest outdoor cuisine imaginable. The campfire lights the night sky and the sound of the river lulls us to sleep. (During the summer campfires may be prohibited.)
For Lodge Trips: After the first day we reach Marial Lodge, one of the Rogue's most historic places. The charm of Marial is only matched by the warm hospitality and delicious food. On day two we hike from here to the museum-like Rogue river ranch, and then get in the boats for a fantastic day of rafting. We reach Clay Hill Lodge this afternoon and unwind on the deck that has an absolutely beautiful view of the Rogue. The meals here are superb! The lodges have hot showers, warm beds, and homespun help.
Final Day: After breakfast we float the river, enjoy lunch on the banks of the magical Rogue and reach take-out in the early afternoon. Following a celebration toast to a great rafting trip, we head over the hills back to Galice. The drive is approximately 2.5 hours on a relatively steep and windy road that affords wide views of the Siskiyou Mountains. We reach Galice generally in time for night flights out of Medford. Note: The river take-out point at Agness is approximately sixty miles from the Oregon coast. Those with travel plans that include visiting the coast can have their vehicles shuttled to the take-out point at Agness for a nominal fee.
