Our 6 day Johnstone Strait Kayaking Expedition offers you a chance to paddle one of the most amazing kayak routes in North America. We begin this tour from a remote lodge set in the Broughton Archipelago where we will spend our first night prior to starting our kayak tour. We will then traverse the entire Broughton Archipelago, one of the most stunning seascapes on earth, before entering Johnstone Strait and the realm of the killer whales.
The Killer Whale are one of many attractions on this expedition. Getting a chance to paddle in their habitat is a thrill of a lifetime. Johnstone Strait is quite simply the best place on earth to kayak with the Killer Whales, also known as Orca, in the wild. Most of British Columbia’s Killer Whales return to these waters to feed, sleep, play, and rub their bodies on the pebble beaches of world-famous Robson Bight. .
Tour Itinerary
Day 1: Leave Quadra Island and Campbell River in the late morning, and drive to Telegraph Cove. We will be meeting our water taxi and host, Bruce McMoran at 2 pm. Load and board the water taxi which takes us on a scenic ride to our remote lodge in the Broughton Archipelago. We will spend the remainder of the day relaxing at the lodge, going for short hikes and enjoying the peace and quite. A wonderful home cooked meal with local ingredients and some colorful conversation will complete the day.
Day 2: We will start day 2 with a hearty breakfast, a cup of fresh roasted coffee, and a relaxed departure once we have packed our kayaks and introduced you to the basics of kayaking. We will then say good bye to our host and set off on our magical journey.
Day 3-4: Journey through the remote areas of the Broughton Archipelago visiting native villages, seeking out wildlife and camping on remote Islands.
Day 5-6: Travel to Johnstone Strait and the realm of the Orca. This is our chance to paddle in their habitat. If we are lucky we will have close encounters with these magnificent animals. On one of these days we may have time to hike up to the researchers look out. Return to Telegraph Cove in the afternoon of day 6. From here we will drive back to the Spirit of the West base on Quadra Island.
