Tibet is a spectacular travel destination. The Tibetan people are innocent and welcoming, the scenery is awe-inspiring, the religious fervor is transfixing, and the trekking is manageable given the high altitudes. What Nepal was 20 years ago, a relatively unvisited premier travel destination, Tibet is today. With restrictions on travel to Tibet essentially gone for organized groups, now is the time to visit this wonderful area of the world.
Your Itnerary
Traveling in Tibet for most people consists of two parts: acclimatization in Lhasa and a trek. Lhasa is at a sky-high 11,850 feet and we spend three days in the Forbidden City to let our bodies get used to this altitude. Lhasa is a captivating city and is well worth the three days we spend there.
A trek, however, is the best way to see the high-altitude plateau and native Tibetans that make Tibet truly great. We spend four days on a totally unknown trek in an area that is not too far from Lhasa and at a reasonable altitude. "Trekking" is not the same as backpacking. You carry only a small daypack while our yaks and yak drivers take care of all our gear. We also have the joy of a large mess tent, a private toilet tent, hot water for washing, and an abundance of excellent food.
In 2006, we have adapted our standard trek route to eliminate the high-altitude (17,100 foot) pass. Instead, our trek will be in the 14,000-foot range, which will make it much easier for those of you not used to high altitudes. In addition, the lower altitudes are generally warmer, greener, and more scenic.
Accommodation:
We begin and end our Adventure at the Novotel Peace Hotel in Beijing, a five-star hotel in the heart of town. Here we enjoy a luxurious Chinese & American buffet breakfast as well as close access to Tiananmen Square. In Lhasa, we stay in the Dhood Gu Hotel, a faithful replication of a traditional Tibetan hotel but with modern amenities and located near the main Barkhor area. We stay in two modest hotels in the towns of Shigatse and Giyantse as we move towards our trek location and continue acclimatizing. Finally, we spend three nights actually camping, where we provide group camping gear and you need only provide a sleeping bag and pad.
For a truly outstanding vacation, join us in Tibet on top of the world!
