Your Itinerary

Day 1:
Arrival in Suriname: From the airport you will be transfered to your hotel in Paramaribo. The drive from Zanderij to Paramaribo will take approximately one hour.

Day 2:
Paramaribo city tour: A guided tour to the most important sites of Paramaribo with many places worth seeing and with their peculiarities.

Paramaribo at your leisure.: An opportunity to discover the many aspects of Paramaribo at your own convenience. You can do your shopping for greeting cards and souvenirs or just go nosing in the Central Market or the shops of Saramaccastraat or pay a visit to the Paramaribo Zoo or any of the other possibilities of Paramaribo.

Day 3:
Commewijne Plantation Boattrip: A guided historical tour of the old plantations of the Commewijne by boat, that will take you through the polders, by the sluices of the old colonial times.

Day 4:
Paramaribo - Witagron: From Paramaribo by bus over a rough jungle road to the Kwinti Afro-surinamer village Witagron.

Witagron - Ralleighfalls: At Witagron we get on a dugout canoe headed for Ralleigh Falls in the Central Suriname Nature Reserve, one of the largest Nature Reserves in South America.

Day 5:
Ralleigh Rapids - Voltzberg: Today an early breakfast. We will head for the Voltzberg. To get to the Voltzberg we need to hike through a variation of vegetations including creek forest, rock vegetation and high dryland tropical rainforest. With luck, and our own capability not to make too much of a racket, we may chance upon fascinating wildlife sightings such as monkeys. For those with the spirit and condition the day can be topped with a climb to the top of the Voltzberg, a granite inselberg whilst others may enjoy the fresh waters of the Manari waterfall. After a meal we return to the comfort of our lodge at Ralleigh Rapids.

Day 6:
Ralleigh rapids - Mother Rapid: After breakfast we head for the Moedervallen, the main rapids of the Ralleigh Rapids complex. First for a short boattrip. Then a 3 to 4 hours hike to reach the Moedervallen. From there we go for a massage at the Manari waterfall. After luch there is occasion to go for a short educational walk on the island. The rest of the afternoon you can spend at your leisure. Weather permitting we may enjoy a barbeque evening.

Day 7:
Ralleigh Rapids - birdwatching: Early in the morning, the earlier the better, we go out on the river for some birdwatching.

Ralleigh Rapids - Paramaribo by plane: We fly to Paramaribo in a small aircraft over the endless rainforest.

Day 8:
Paramaribo at leisure: An opportunity to discover the many aspects of Paramaribo at your own convenience. You can do your shopping for greeting cards and souvenirs or just go nosing in the Central Market or the shops of Saramaccastraat or pay a visit to the Paramaribo Zoo or any of the other possibilities of Paramaribo.

Day 9:
Paramaribo - Palumeu: From Paramaribo we fly by small airplane for around an hour to the airstrip Palumeu. Upon arrival we checkin. In the early afternoon we go for a short boattrip to the Palawa Island where we have our lunch. On the island there is opportunity for swimming and relaxing in the rapid or just nosing about the small island. In the afternoon we return and visit the Amerindian village Palumeu where we meet village elders. After dinner we are informed about the culture of the Trio and Wayana Amerindians of this region.

Day 10:
Palumeu: After breakfast we depart by boat for Poti Hill. Here we will take a short walk and climb to the top of Poti Hill. From there we go to Palawa Island where we take our lunch. In the evening the Amerindians give us a demonstration of some of their musical instruments. After this we go for a short night trip on the river.

Day 11:
Palumeu: In the morning we go for a boattrip to the impressive Mabuka rapids. We take a walk in the forest. There is opportunity for swimming, relaxing and fishing. In the afternoon we return to Palumeu. In the evening a campfire - weather permitting.

Day 12:
Palumeu: Early in the morning we go for a walk in the forest with a local guide. After this we go to Palawa Island for lunch and relaxation. The rest of the afternoon you may enjoy at your own leisure. There is opportunity to go fishing or peddling in a dugout with the villagers. Weather permitting we light a campfire in the evening.

Day 13:
Palumeu - Amerindian souvenirs: In the morning we go for a short walk to the Amerindian village where we can buy handicraft and local utensils.

Palumeu - Botopasi: After lunch we are piched up by a small airplane that will bring us to Botopasi, a small Saramaccan Afro-surinamer village. From Botopasi it is a short walk through the forest to Moizoli our camping place. During our stay at Moizoli we will sleep in hammocks. In the evening the chief of the village is informed of our arrival and an appointment is made to meet with him the next day.

Day 14:
Botopasi - jungle trek: In the morning we are led through the village en get to meet the village chief. After this short acquintance with the villagers we leave for a stiff hike through the forest af four to five hours that will take us through three villages by the river, Dibeke, Foetoenakaba and Pikin-slee giving us ample opportunity to witness the daily lifestyle and activities of the Saramaccans. Our local guides will lead us and answer any questions we have. The late afternoon and evening are free at your leisure.

Day 15:
Botopasi - Dyumu: Today we travel further upstream to the Tapawatra Rapids. On the way to the rapids we pass many smaller rapids and a number of villages. On arrival at Tapawatra near the village Djumu we relax and enjoy the strong turbulent current of these magnificent rapids. Later in the day we return to our base camp.

Day 16:
Botopasi - Atyoni: Early in the morning we leave Botopasi and head voor Atyoni. On the way we pass many villages and rapids.

Atyoni - Brownsberg: At Atyoni we get on the bus and drive to the Brownsberg Nature Reserve where we will spend the night.

Day 17:
Brownsberg: Brownsberg Plateau and it's surroundings are part of the Brownsberg Nature Reserve known for the varied vegetation and the many species of birds. On evening strolls one may come across brightly colored poison dart frogs.

Day 18:
Brownsberg - Tonka Island: From Brownsberg we leave by bus for Afobaka where a dam was built for a hydrological powerplant to provide energie for the aluminum melters of Paranam. At the dam we get into a dugout canoe that will bring us to Tonka Island that is situated in the middle of the lake.

Day 19:
Tonka eiland: Tonka eiland is a recreation resort based around the etno-botanic laboratory of Frits van Troon, renowned for his work with the Amerindians in the Shaman's Apprentice Program of Mark Plotkin.

Day 20:
Tonka Island - Paramaribo: From Tonka Island we travel by dugout canoe to Afobaka where we get on the bus headed for Paramaribo.

Day 21:
Paramaribo at your leisure: An opportunity to discover the many aspects of Paramaribo at your own convenience. You can do your shopping for greeting cards and souvenirs or just go nosing in the Central Market or the shops of Saramaccastraat or pay a visit to the Paramaribo Zoo or any of the other possibilities of Paramaribo.

Day 22:
Transfer to Zanderij: Transfer from the hotel to the airport at Zanderij. The drive from Paramaribo to Zanderij takes about an hour.

Zanderij departure procedure: After arrival at the airport you will check in your luggage, this takes about half an hour. After checking in you can choose the wait outside or go into the departure area, when it is open, for your taxfree shopping.
