This trek goes through the “Roof of Kamchatka”, the Klyuchevskoi group of volcanoes (two of them are climbed by easy routes), then down to south along three wild wooded valleys. Hot volcanic springs “Tumroks” in a remote and beautiful valley are visited and another volcano is climbed there.
Your Itinerary
Day 1: Arrival in Petropavlovsk. 2hr bus drive to the hotel in Partunka (double rooms, hot spring bath). Included: (B).
Day 2: Long transfer (600km) in a converted four-wheel drive truck (with seats in the cabin) to Esso village. Leave at 9.00am, arrive at 9.00pm. Private hotel accommodation. Hot spring swimming pool. Included: (B).
Day 3: Transfer by a rough road to Kopyto Hill, the starting point of the trek in Klyuchevskoi Group. Leave at 9-10am, arrive to 5-6pm. On the way cross the Kamchatka river by ferry. Camp. Included: (B), (L), (D).
Day 4: Walk on the rough road in tundra, then on a path to Barany stream, 5-6hr. Camp. Included: (B), (L), (D).
Day 5: Walk at the foot of Tolbachik volcano along the bed of Studyonaya river to the Tolbachiksky (1500m) pass. Camp. Included: (B), (L), (D).
Day 6: Further walk around Tolbachik over the Tolud (1300m) pass to Tolud hut. Camp. Included: (B), (L), (D).
Day 7: Walk to under Plosky Tolbachik volcano (3080)m. Camp or hut in the former Leningradskaya scientific station. Included: (B), (L), (D).
Day 8: Non technical ascent of Plosky Tolbachik (9-10hr) with return to camp. Included: (B), (L), (D).
Day 9: Excursion in a truck and on foot to the new cones of the Tolbachik eruption of 1975-76. Camp/station hut.
Day 10: Walk back to “Tolud” seismology station. Campstation hut. Included: (B), (L), (D).
Day 11 – Day 16: Walk down over volcanic desert, tundra and taiga along rivers Pravy Tolvachik, Levy Tolvachik and Levy Schapina to Tumroksky hot springs. It is a private tourist base in a beautiful valley with several wooden cabins and hunters’ hut. Camp. Accommodation at private cabins is possible for a small sum of $4. Included: (B).
Day 17: Rest day, hot spring baths. Included: (B).
Day 18: Walk on path to under Kizimen volcano (2480m). Non technical ascent of the volcano with return to Tumroksky hot springs. 11-12hr. Included: (B), (L), (D).
Day 19: Walk 5-6hr on a path (leading to Lazo village) in taiga to two huts standing in tundra. Camphuts. Included: (B), (L), (D).
Day 20: Walk further to the head of a rough road, going to the village. An expedition truck will pick up the group and bring to the village. Accommodation at a private cottage. Included: (B).
Day 21: Long drive (a whole day) in an expedition truck back to to PPK. Hotel accommodation (double rooms, B&B). Included: (B).
Day 22: Lazy morning. A city tour, visiting the ethnographic museum, bus drive to the Pacific shore. Optional sea excursion in Avacha Bay. Included: (B).
Day 23: Bus drive to Elizovo Airport. Flight to Moscow. Included: (B).
