Ski-touring route at the heart of Kamchatka including the climb of Klyuchevskoi volcano, the highest mountain in Asian part of Russia and one of the world highest active volcanoes. For acclimatization the climbs of two “backyard volcanoes” not far from Petropavlovsk, Avachinsky and Koryaksky, are planned. In this program we do not use a helicopter to get to the starting point on the plateau at the foot of Klyuchevskoi. It is not only its cost that advises that but also its total dependence on weather, and the latter can say its last and definite “no” to any group with high ambitions and limited time to fulfill them. To go on this trip you do not have to be a super skier, the ascending routes being moderate in steepness. The program is fairly condensed, so, taking into account much heavier effects of altitude in Kamchatka than in the Alps or Himalaya, you should be fit enough to move up from the sea level to 2700m from the very start. When moving to Klyuchevskoi a very good option is using of a skidoo to bring the group’s load (up to 150kg) to Derzhavin lake or even higher.
Tour Itinerary:
Day 1: Arrival in Petropavlovsk. Accommodation in a hotel (DBL, B&B) Included: (B)
Day 2: Bus drive to the road point nearest to Avacha Refuge under Avachinsky and Koryaksky volcanoes. Walking and skiing up to the Refuge (20km, 5hr). Accommodation in wooden cabins with stoves for heating. Included: (B)
Day 3: Ascent of Avachinsky volcano (2751m). 10 h. Refuge. Included: (B), (L), (D)
Day 4: Ascent of Koryaksky volcano (3456m). 14-15 h. Refuge. Included: (B), (L), (D)
Day 5: Skiing back to the road. Bus transfer to PPK. Hotel. Included: (B), (L), (D)
Day 6: Bus journey to Klyuchi settlement (12-13hr). Accommodation (very simple) in a private house. Included: (B)
Day 7: Skiing to Derzhavina lake (25 km, 1150 m to gain). Camp at 1300 m. Included: (B), (L), (D)
Day 8: Skiing to Sredny glacier (18 km, 700 m to gain). Camp at 2000 m. Included: (B), (L), (D)
Day 9: Ascent of Sredny volcano (3000 m). Camp. Included: (B), (L), (D)
Day 10: Skiing to under the west ridge of Klyuchevsky (700 m to gain). Camp. Included: (B), (L), (D)
Day 11: Ascent of Uskovsky volcano(1250 m climbing). Tents. Included: (B), (L), (D)
Day 12: Ascent of Klyuchevskoi volcano (4750m). Camp. Included: (B), (L), (D)
Day 13: Ascent of Klyuchevskoi volcano (4750m). Camp. Included: (B), (L), (D)
Day 14: Skiing down to Klyuchi settlement. Camp on the way. Accommodation in a private house. Depending on snow conditions an expedition truck can pick up the group at some point closer to the village. Included: (B), (L), (D)
