Burgundy! The name brings to mind rolling hills, delicious food, and - most of all - fantastic wine. Combine this with the joys of Paris and you have one exceptional vacation! During this tour we spend two days each bicycling the small valley side roads, walking through the vineyards, and inline skating on paved flat paths. (It is possible to bike on skating days.) This area is reknowned for its fine dining and wine.
On this multisport tour we spend four days skating, two days hiking, and one day biking (non-skaters can rent a bike on all skating days.) We stay in excellent small hotels, drink fantastic local wine, and eat what is likely the best food to be found on any Zephyr tour.
Your Itinerary
Days 1: We meet in the town of Chalon-sur-Saone in the heart of Burgundy. We start with a skate on a beautiful paved path, flat as a pancake and running 20 kilometers along a canal. We dine that evening in the "gastronomique" restaurant of our hotel and have time to wander through the heart of old-town Chalon.
Day 2: We pick up our bicycles (included in the tour price) and head off to the fields and side roads of this lovely part of the world. We visit a medieval town, small villages, and ancient churches on our way to our second hotel, the Hotel Fontaine de Baranges in the small village of Buxy.
Day 3: We hike through rolling vineyards and on country paths, often with a view overlooking the main valley of Burgundy.
Day 4: We are back on skates (or a bike if you choose), skating on a 42-kilometer path through vineyards, pastures, and small towns to Cluny, a town famous for its gigantic abbey founded in the 10th century. Our hotel, the Bourgogne, is built right into the abbey walls and serves as an ideal location for our farewell dinner.
Day 5: We have time for a short hike in the local hills before leaving Burgundy by bus for the wonders of Paris! That evening we skate in the famous Friday Night Skate with over 10,000 Parisian skaters, an experience not to be missed.
Day 6: We tour Paris on skates, learning about the city, its culture, and its people. We eat in great bistros, enjoy curbside cafes, and soak in Parisian life. Finally, we spend our last morning skating up the Champs Elysees and along the Seine River on a route closed to cars.
Accommodation:
Our first night's hotel is Le Saint Georges, only feet from the train station and minutes from the old town of Chalon-sur-Saone. We then move to our next hotel, the three-star rated Hotel Fontaine de Baranges, in the small town of Buxy. Our third hotel is the Hotel de Bourgogne, built on the foundations of the 1000-year old Abbaye de Cluny. We spend our final two nights in the Hôtel le Régent, a small but comfortable hotel in the heart of the action.
