Gun-Galuut is a marvelous combination of open steppes, steppe hills, lovely lakes and amazing landscape. We have protected the Gun-Galuut Nature Reserve as it's home for the endangered wild mountain sheep Argali and some other rare species of birds. The beautiful wild sheep Argali inhabit the stunning mountains of Baits and Berkh with other wild animals. The herds have more than 80 Argalis and give a big chance for the nature lovers to view these fantastic animals from the closest distance and take photos. We involve the locals to the conservation process by encouraging their alternative income from responsible tourism like renting horses, yak and camels to tourists, offer their handcrafts and their gers for home stay. Proceeds from this tour go directly to the Argali Sheep conservation activities in Mongolia.
Argali Sheep (Ovis Ammon) is the largest and most impressive of the wild sheep, the Argali was described by Linnaeus in 1758. Wild sheep Argali now exists in hilly terrain near high mountains at elevations of 1,300-6,100 meters (4,200-19,500 feet) a very few countries in the world including Mongolia, and this gorgeous animal is listed in the World Red Book under the status of vulnerable species (IUCN, 2000).
Gun-Galuut Nature Reserve was founded in 2003 in order to protect the endangered wildlife Argali sheep and to preserve the delicate eco-system of the Kherlen River Basin while developing environment-friendly and community-based tourism in this area. The reserve area is 15000 hectares. The Nature Reserve is truly the marvelous combination of high mountains, colorful flowers, pretty lakes, rivers and wetland waters with full of water birds including some rare and endangered species.
