Mongolia is a perfect destination for a stressed birder, who would like to spend some time at a quiet, peaceful and beautiful place. This tour takes place in the amazing National Parks of Terelj and Gün Galuut, paradise for birders. Taking part in the tour you will have great opportunities of watching and photographing many species of water birds including some endangered species; Swans, Geese, Cranes, Storks, Herons, Ducks, Gulls; and forest birds - Cuckoos, Owls, Larks, Woodpeckers, Thrushes as well as raptors Falcons, Hawks, Eagles, Vultures, Buzzards; from the closest distance. You will also watch Argali Mountain Wild Sheep-Dream of every hunter, and Takhi – the only existing species of wild horse worldwide. The tour is planned precisely with a high consideration on safety, education, comfort and of course a lot of fun. An ornithologist professor is invited from the Zoology Department of Mongolian National University to lead the tour and share his knowledge of bird lives in different areas.
Gun-Galuut Nature Reserve is a nature reserve with spectacular and untouched nature, which is 130 km east in Ulaanbaatar. Beautiful Lakes Ikh-Gun, Ayaga and Baga-Gun are the home to migrating waterbirds including some endangered rare species such as: White Crane, White-napped Crane, Black Stork, Whooper Swan, Common Heron, Chinese Pond Heron and so on. And you may also watch Common Crane, Bar Headed Goose, Swan Goose, Ruddy Shelduck, White-headed Duck, Mallard, Gadwall, Common Teal, Garganey, Mandarin Duck, Northern Shoveler and several species of Gulls as well. And there is plenty of viewing of prey birds such as various types of Falcon, Eagle, Kite, Osprey, Buzzard, Hawk and Vulture.
In the amazing Terelj National Park you have opportunities of watching many species of water birds along the rivers Tuul and Terelj, such as Common Crane, Bar Headed Goose, Swan Goose, Ruddy Shelduck, White-headed Duck, Mallard, Gadwall, Common Teal, Garganey, Mandarin Duck, Northern Shoveler and several species of Gulls so far. There is plenty of view from many species of forest birds and prey birds too.
Tour Itinerary:
Day 1 - Arrival in Ulaanbaatar, meet with the guide at the airport, transfer to a hotel. Visits to Museum of Natural History & Zaisan Memorial. Drive to Gun-Galuut Nature Reserve, transfer to a ger camp.
Day 2-3 - Bird watching at the lakes Ayaga and Ikh-Gun. You can also have opportunities of watching endangered wild mountain sheep-Argali at the beautiful mounts nearby. Full board at the ger camp.
Day 4 - After breakfast drive to Terelj National Park for 2 hours. Transfer to a ger camp. Bird watching at the National Park. Lunch, dinner and overnight there.
Day 5-6 - Bird watching in the morning, after lunch drive to Ulaanbaatar. Transfer to a hotel. Shopping and traditional folk concert in the evening. Hotel overnight. Dinner at a local restaurant. Overnight at the hotel.
Day 7 - After breakfast transfer to the airport.
